Hi there,
First time poster.
About a year ago, I had adrenal fatigue, and I over corrected the situation by over supplementing and over stimulating my adrenals. Anyways, my adrenals are now overproducing cortisol, but my DHEA is still low. I don't have the exact values for the cortisol, as my naturopath has them, but they are considerably high.
Anyways, I picked up some Holy Basil, Phosphatidylserine (PS) and some Relora. What is the best way to approach this?
Take all three of them everyday? Only stick to one supplement at a time? I obviously don't want to overdo it again :)

I found that PS kept me awake if I used it too late in the day, so take it to correct the corresponding next phase.
Relora and tulsi did nothing for me...nor did PS from what I remember...

This is a reply to # 1,793,738I recently have started posting as well but have had high cortisol for three years off an on. I have gotten my down before but then stress would send it back up again.
What has worked:
Take a B complex several times a day. I started taking 7 Keto Dhea and noticed it doesn't really lower cortisol but helps my liver.
Part of what I did before is to take 4 - 5 times a day and relax. Reminding my mind and my body I am calm now. This was a huge factor in lowering my cortisol. You can meditate, use Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), do breathing exercises, or brainwave entrainment using binaural beats. I have a binaural beat meditation on a MP3 player and sometimes have it on all night at a low level while I sleep. Then listen to during the day for 30 min. I also us a healing technique similar to EFT daily to release stress and heal. It takes about 6 week of doing this but it was the only thing that cured my insomnia.
Sleeping 10 - 12 hours a day. If you can't sleep that long lie there and meditate.
Stop drinking alcoholic, it raises cortisol (this is a biggy). No caffeine and stay away from simple carbs.
Excercise as long as it's under one hour helps lower cortisol not too intense.
The rest is an experiment. I also bought Relora 3 days ago. It gave me tension in my head so I had to lower my dose to 1/2 a capsule I am not sure if it's working yet. I tried Holy Basil 2.5 years ago a noticed nothing. Phosphatidylserine relaxed me for two days then after that gave me insomnia. I have been trying Rhodiola but I think it may be energizing my adrenals. I also have 5HTP and mucuna Dopa. I take a very small dose to help relax me. Defiantly trying supplements one at a time for a couple of days help you gauge each one. Good luck and let me know if you find anything that works.

Sleeping 10-12 hours might be really tough to do, considering the amount I need to do, but I will try to get as much sleep as possible.
So it seems as though not too much has helped you with regards to supplements? I will try to start off with the relora and see what happens from there. Hopefully it'll help a bit. I'll let you know guys know how it goes.

This is a classic quote from the type of person that ends up with adrenal fatigue (myself included). No amount of supplements you consume will work if you don't change your lifestyle.
You need to do less than the average person for a long while if you have a hope of recovering. Otherwise, you will get worse. I made this mistake....most of us do if we still have enough energy to drive ourselves.
For the sake of your health....find a way to do less. Or at least be slow and mindful when you are working so you can stay relaxed while doing your activities.

Well I would say B complex helps the best so far. I went to a five day music festival 2 weeks ago. I was thinking "why did I decide to do this it's going to drain me" Well I got through it and had a great time but it was the B complex 4 times a day and sleep 12 hours a night that got me through. I will say that different supplements work for different people. I am still trying the Relora, it got a lot of good feedback about lowering cortisol so I am hoping it will help me heal faster. Also taking Cod liver oil, lysine and Tri chromium, all said to help lower cortisol.
Also feo66 is right. I tried to overdo it and didn't take care of myself I probably would have survived that but it was actually relationships that was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Just try fitting destressing into your day several times. If you can afford massage that would be great too, but AF is kinda like having a broken leg, you stay off it and rest it and it will recover faster. When I was younger my adrenals would recover on their own when I crashed completely with fatigue. Now I keep getting stuck in the too much cortisol mode and have problems sleeping and never get fatigued. Mine has gone on off an on for 3 years and it's starting to scare me. My skin is really dry, my liver is starting to have problems digesting at times, the cortisol steals my sex drive and I have lost most of my muscle tone, my eyesight has worsened. The longer the high cortisol goes on the more it takes a toll on your body. Stay positive and just decide your going to heal now. Your mind is the most powerful healing system you have.

PS and holy basil are great for lowering cortisol. Zinc is also good.You are undergoing pregnenolone steal. Under chronic stress, most raw material goes to cortisol, instead of making other hormones in the steriod cascade.You need to calm your nervous system down to get out of stressed mode. Gentle yoga and walking worked for me as did cod liver oil at night and some l tryptophan and melatonin. After a few months, I'm no longer "wired and tired" at night, just tired. Laying down during the day is also good. The key is to get your body out of the flight or fight response. I also take Epsom Salt baths with lavender essential oil when I'm feeling stressed. Make sure to take breaks when you're tired instead of pushing yourself through it. You will still get most things done. If you don't get everything done, oh well there's always tomorrow or the next day. Just pay attention to how your body feels. - Earthing UserX

I was trying to figure that out too the last couple of days. Last time it took a month to get my cortisol down from stage two, I am just estimating that is the stage of adrenal exhaustion I was in. Then I got stressed out and it went back up. I am guessing for me a month. Then another month to heal my adrenals from stage one. Then another month just to be sure.
I think it depends on how young and strong your system is. When I was in my late 20's and early 30's it took me about 3 weeks to bounce back. Also some of my symptoms are not as bad as some other folks here. I am hypothyroid but I don't have leaky gut or am I hypoglycemic. I have a host of other symptoms the worse is insomnia. I went a whole yr without sleeping. I would just lie there and pretend to sleep. Now I do wake up after 4 -5 hours but I can get some shut eye.
I am not sure about overdosing on the supps you mentioned. I do know with the ones that affect serotonin you can if your taking a bunch of them and your way overdoing it, for example St Johns Wort. There is something called serotonin syndrome and it is a life or death situation. I saw it on another post recently. This is a reply to # 1,794,799So, I've been taking the Phosphatidyl Serine with some success actually. The only problem is that it doesn't seem to last a long time.
And I just recently found out that cold feet and hands are a symptom of high cortisol, which I have. Also, when my feet and hands are cold, my hair feels like straw and is very rough.
I also notice that in the morning, about an hour after waking I feel the worst, cold hands and feet. However, if I take a nap in the afternoon, I feel great when I wake up. My fair feels soft as silk and my hands and feet are great, but unfortunately that doesn't last for the rest of the day.
Does any of this sound familiar to any of you? I'm trying to follow all of the previous suggestions, but is there anything else that anyone would suggest I try?

I am glad you are finding things that help. I have heard the hair thing before from one other person but have not experienced it myself. I have the cold hands and feet. I noticed mine warmed up quickly one night after I took melatonin. I do have one thing that actually has been working fantastic for me. It's my number one weapon against the cortisol and it has speeded up my healing significantly. I don't know if it's up your alley but it has been nothing short of amazing. It's called the Healing Codes. They used to be expensive but Dr. Loyd just released a book version of The Healing Codes that is very affordable. Actually I just found that out yesterday. You can find it on Amazon for $15 plus shipping. It's much like EFT if you have researched that on Youtube. I know a lot of people that use and love EFT but it just wasn't as effective for me. This is a reply to # 1,797,164Yes that is the book. I have used the Healing Codes threes times, but I only did it long enough for some of my symptoms to disappear then stopped. I am kicking myself now that I didn't continue and heal my AF all the way. I started them again 2 weeks ago but this time I went through all my supplements one by one taking each to make sure it wasn't any of those that were really making my healing faster. So far in two week I have reduced my cortisol significantly and have even started to lose weight. I hesitated to mention the Healing Codes here before because they were very pricey before. So when I saw the book I was so happy to see now just about anyone can afford to get them.
I worked a job before that allowed me to be exposed to and try a lot of really different kinds of healing techniques. Of all the things I have tried the Healing Codes has been one of the most powerful. I really like to find works well and works fast. EFT is also a good technique and I found it worked better for me but I had to tapping on both sides of my body. Then I got to try the healing codes and every time I do them my body lets out a deep sigh like I just let go of a ton of stress.Advertisement

Are you getting saliva tests done that often? Or are you just using symptoms?
If you are using symptoms, which ones are you using?

This is a reply to # 1,797,196I am using symptoms. My two most major symptoms are bags under my eyes and my sleep. I had double bags under my eyes and they have diminished a lot in the last 1.5 weeks. I had bags for 3 years along with a host of other symptoms that started at the same time. Also I can meditate now, I yawn, I am starting to times were I am tired or sleepy. Non of which hardly happened before except the other times where I was doing the healing codes and getting tons of rest. My Cortisol was running so high that I never yawned or got tired or fatigued or sleepy.
