Dream of High School Sweetheart

To make a long story short, he dumped me, a lifetime went by, (40 years) we spoke, it was horrible (for me) and six more years went by. Then, out of the blue, I have these dreams....
First dream, we were at the prom and he was kissing me with a very deep felt affection.
Second Dream, He was standing by his car dressed in a dazzling white outfit (a long sleeve casual dress type shirt with matching trousers) which really set off his jet black hair, which was on the long side. He looked much younger then he would be today...but considerably older then when I knew him. (35-40)
He told me we should start seeing each other again. I don't remember what I said, but it amounted to "maybe".
Then this middle aged woman jumped into my face and admonished me for being coy.
I was being coy...out of self defense. I burst into tears at her words, and then she said ...I can't imagine pain like that.
Then dream ended. It felt very real. Not like a dream, but more like an astral encounter.
Can anyone make anything out of this? It has really shaken my cage. In many ways I never got over him, but our last encounter left me with a very bad taste in my mouth.

The last time I connected with him, I cried for three years afterward. I don't think I could be hurt like that again, but this is a complicated situation for me.
If it is a guide, which is an interesting concept I had not thought of, how would you interpret it?

I actually don't know if this is a guide or not and truthfully, I jumped at the idea just to take your attention off the idea of trying to see him again.
Usually in dreams all characters are to be viewed as aspects of yourself. The only way that we can connect to other people is by our own experience. If we see purity in someone, it is a reflection of the purity in oneself. If we see someone whom we view as inconsiderate, that too is in us.
The first part of the dream is at a prom, which indicates end of one thing, beginning of next. Also note that proms and "Graduation" go together. To me this indicates that you have under gone enough trials in your life and are ready to graduate. Also life runs in cycles. It is spring, a time of renewal...
Can you look at this man in white and see him as part of yourself? The innocent, trusting, virginal part?
It is this part of yourself that is asking to be re-connected, not the actual man from the past.
The woman who accused you of being coy is most likely part of your inner critic. (mothers influence?) Also a part of you who experiences some of your pain and is abhorred by it.
In all I see this as a very positive dream, telling you that you are ready to move forward. In what way, I do not know.
Don't know if I've helped, but hope you're more relaxed
about the whole situation.

This is a reply to # 1,795,094Well, OK. But it seems to me that if guides, or my inner, higher self, were telling me I am ready to move on, it would have been a stranger standing by the car, and not someone so deeply embedded in my past for whom I have such strong feelings.
Moving on is a term I dislike anyway as it tends to trivalize past experiences as if they weren't forever a part of who you are- for lack of a better term.
Even if that were not the case, at my age I have no where to go. I am certainly NOT looking for another relationship, although a resolution to this one that might put my heart at peace would be greatly appreciated. Nevertheless, long ago I accepted the fact that that was not going to happen. So why the dreams? Dreams of him are a torment. They stir of up feelings I would rather not feel.
Ironically, until I wrote to him six years ago, I never dreamed of him. Not even when we were dating.

would it have made the same impression on you?
Would you have even remembered the dream?
I had to smile when I read your comment about trivialize.
Back in 2004 I used the same word in connection to the phrase "been there done that".
No one else can know/experience how much you hurt.
Pain is very personal.
You identify with your pain to the extent that it has become a part of you. Like losing an arm or leg, who would you be without it?
Perhaps that is what this dream is asking you.
