I’ve started doing castor oil packs but I’m not sure if I’m doing it right. According to the directions that I read you are supposed to soak three 6”x8” sheets of cotton flannel with 3 tablespoons of castor oil. However when I lay the sheets on each other and add the recommended amount of castor oil it doesn’t even soak through to the other side of the third sheet and thus is definitely in no danger of staining my pajamas. After I do that I place the sheets over my liver and wrap that area in plastic wrap to keep it on me. The top and bottom edges usually end up sticking out but the part that sticks out has no oil. The instructions make it seem as though you're probably going to stain what ever your wearing but I don't see how that's possible unless I'm doing something wrong.
I then place a hot water bottle over the pack for thirty minutes, remove it and then try to sleep. The first time I slept with a castor oil pack I had trouble falling asleep, it was a hot night, but finally slept deeply and had trouble waking up. The second time I did this I also had a hard time going to sleep. It was a hot and muggy night. I kept waking up at night because it was so hot and muggy but I had no trouble waking up when I was supposed to even though I was still tired. My husband slept through the night and he normally feels hotter than me. I thought a castor oil pack was supposed to help you sleep.
I have heard from different sources that you shouldn’t reuse a castor oil pack. But I’ve also heard that you can reuse it. If you leave a castor oil pack on overnight can you still reuse it if you put it in the fridge or is the oil rancid by that point? Is it true that you can only reuse a castor oil pack 10 times?

This is a reply to # 1,832,550OK, after 4 years of using castor oil packs successfully, here's what I did:
What is the area you wish to cover with the pack? Around 20 inches by 10 inches--if it goes all the way across your upper and lower abdomen -- under your breasts down to the area just above your pubic bone? I have approximated the size of the area. The size you are measuring is going over the liver and intestinal area and will help both.
Cut a piece of flannel ( I used cotton flannel) and fold it to the dimesnions you want. You're going to have 3 thicknesses or layers of cloth.
Take a plastic garbage bag and put the folded cloth over it. I poured the castor oil in the middle and then spread it out to the size of the area I wanted to cover. You are not going to saturate a couple of inches along the edges. You don't want it dripping, just saturated. While you have it on in the night, your skin is going to absorb a lot of the castor oil. I used a heating pad on medium all night. In hot weather, you might not want to. But use it long enough to get the castor oil warm enough to start it penetrating the skin.
I put a towel over the plastic bag and tucked all of it into my shorts. It's bulky and hot in hot weather, but will do a lot of good. Use enough castor oil to saturate a pack for the size of your body area you want to cover.
You can get the big, plastic storage dishes at the grocery store that have covers on them. In the morning fold up your castor oil pack w/o the towel--just the pack and the plastic garbage bag and put it in one of these dishes and store it in the refridgerator in the daytime. If you want a clean garbage bag the next day, store only the pack in the plastic dish.
Every night you use it, you are going to have to add a lot more castor oil, because your skin has absorbed a lot of it the night before. Use the pack for 30 days and then discard it and make another one. I've washed the pack cloth in the washing machine and used the cloth over again. The castor oil washes out of cotton, but it does stain. These packs are messy. Use only old clothes and old bedding. Protect your mattress.
The remnants of the castor oil that remains on your skin the next morning you can wash off with baking soda.
You've got to use enough castor oil and cover the area you want it to work on. They really work when you do.

This is a reply to # 1,833,128I have studied the Edgar Cayce readings a lot (Edgar Cayce is the psychic who first suggested the idea of the castor oil pack). This is the correct way to do the castor oil pack.
1. Take a cotton flannel and fold it so it has 4 thicknesses (you can buy the cotton flannel at Whole Foods or at Baar.com, or probably on Amazon).
2. Put it in a bowl and literally pour the castor oil (you will need a big bottle) freely onto the flannel so that it is completely soaked through. Don't pour 2-3 tablespoons, that won't do anything. You want to have the whole flannel soaked. Then, with your hands, twist and strain the flannel a little so that the excess oil drips off, but you still want a lot of oil on there.
3. Heat up an electric pad on high heat. Place a garbage bag that is cut a little bigger than the folded flannel on the electric pad and then put the flannel on top of the garbage bag, so that it can get hot.
4. When the pack is warm, lay on a couch or on the bed with pillows propping you up, flip everything over and put it on your right abdomen side, covering the area from below the right ribcage all the way down to your hip. You want to have it as far right as possible.
5. Put some towels or a comforter or pillow on top of the pack to retain and draw more heat onto your body. The point is to have the pack as hot as possible without getting burnt.
Note: You will probably want to place a thick folded towel under you because the oil will drip down your right side, this is normal.
6. Lay there watching TV, reading or relaxing for 1 hour.
7. Remove pack and either wipe area with a cloth or with a cloth soaked in a solution of baking soda and water.
8. Immediately after, take dosage of olive oil to stimulate lymphatics and elimination.
Here is the schedule. Do the castor oil pack for 3 consecutive days, then rest for 3-4 days, then start again for 3 consecutive days, then rest 3-4 days and so on. Do it for 1-3 months.
The first day take 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil right after the pack.
The second day take 1 teaspoon olive oil also.
The third day take 1 tablespoon olive oil.
Edgar Cayce didn't say anything about the garbage bag but people recommend it so the oil doesn't touch the electric pad, but if you want to stay true to Cayce you can replace the garbage bag with a non-soaked thin towel.Advertisement

I soaked the cloth with cast or oil, but I didn't soak it enough to be able to wring it out. It was saturated to the point of dripping, so why put so much on you have to wring it out. That's wasting the castor oil, IMO. You're going to have to add a lot more to the pack every time you use it, anyway. Your skin will only abosorb so much in a night's sleep.
I did the EVOO at night, anyway. Also did the castor oil packs every night when I was real bad off. Left them on all night and the heating pad on medium. It worked. I wouldn't leave th eheating pad on high all night because you could burn yourself. Medium is plenty hot enough all night.
Use old clothes and protect your bedding.
As far as I am concerned the packs are very healing and take away a lot of the pain. I don't see a problem putting them over any part of the body that you want to heal. Schulze did.
What precisely fits your needs is the question.
