I got into oil pulling about 5 months ago because of gingivitis that had turned to periodontitis according to my dentist. Before that, I have had a cleaning every three months, brushed at least twice a day with a special fluoride toothpaste to strengthen my teeth, had changed to the Sonicare electric toothbrush for better cleaning a few years ago, flossed, and used an Ayurvedic mouthwash. Almost no improvement! I grind my teeth at night, which could be a reason for the inflammation.
I started OP after being told I need flap surgery, and after 2 months of diligent OP every morning, my dentist noticed an improvement. Since, I stopped using the fluoride toothpaste, and started to feel better, saw my gums improve further; I stopped using the Sonicare when I noticed it hurt me while brushing my teeth and returned to a soft toothbrush using Weleda's herbal toothpastes.
Last week, I bought an herbal gum tonic, and massaged it into my gums with additional progress in form of natural color, and gums/teeth feeling more 'connected'. Except for one area, where I see no progress, and since using the gum tonic a worsening of the symptoms. My gum line around that tooth has receded up to about 2mm since using the tonic. Sure, it doesn't look as inflamed anymore, but to me that seems because it has disappeared. Sorry for the long introduction to my question now: Does anybody know what could be going on? Because it feels like the rest of my mouth does benefit from the tonic.
I read a lot here around additional possibilities and am about to try Colloidal Silver , did some Iodine swishing today (using Liquid Iodine Forte from Biotics Research that I have been using for a different issue), read about Dr. Schulze 's gum tonic, and on applying a comfrey and cayenne pepper poultice to help restore tissue, and wonder about the Utopia's Colloidal Silver with aloe vera to swish with - but I am a bit at wit's end as to what the best option is at this point, not to worsen that one spot and not to go crazy with all those possibilities.
My regular oil for OP is unrefined, organic sesame, which I absolutely love; I tried walnut today for the first time thinking it might aid the healing process due to the omega-3s etc - it was green when I spit it out. Argh! :-)

This is a reply to # 1,858,835First of all, stop using the tonic that's causing your gums to recede. The only thing I know that actually can help regrow gums is COQ10. Regular oil pulling and COQ10 is the best thing you do for your gums that I'm aware of.
And finally, go outside, hang out with friends, see a concert, do naughty things with your sig other, take to the streets and protest the rising tide of fascism in America. Anything to take your mind off your 2mm gum recision.- Re: Receding Gum Line - what to do? Shen

The tonic (goldenseal root, bayberry root bark, prickly ash, myrrt gym, coptis root) did help the rest of my mouth/gums, but worsened this one area, and I stopped using it when I saw what happened.
I sporadically have taken 30mg CoQ10 over the past month but was skeptical ..., and will bump it up to a regular 60mg a day now.
But how do I get a handle on the inflammation, when it seems like using a gum tonic with ingredients that are otherwise highly recommended in the forum doesn't work for that one area?
And yes, I also do my daily share of contributing to world peace,- and am a little less upset by now, too :-)

This is a reply to # 1,859,031If you actually want to regrow gums, you need a pretty hefty dosage of quality Q10 (or better Ubiquinol) and even then it works very gradually. Noticeable over several years (at least in my case).
I would concentrate more on oil pulling than putting a bunch of herbs/tinctures/etc on your gums. You might want to try coconut oil because it has some antibacterial properties. Maybe a few times a week, then back to sesame or flax seed oil. The coconut might help with the inflammation also if its caused by an infection.

I will keep on pulling for sure, and can try the coconut oil, maybe for a second round of OP in the afternoon or evening. The Iodine gargle and swishing is something I will continue for a while to see if things improve. Every little bit of progress counts! Yet, I am sure my dentist will insist on surgery, which I am not too happy about!
And world peace, as far as I understand, is what happens when people selfishly sit down to meditate in order to feel better and find inner peace, doesn't it? ... :-)- Re: Receding Gum Line - what to do? MrCuddly

This is a reply to # 1,859,135A hefty dose is probably more like 200 mgs of Ubiquinol (which is stronger than regular Q10).
You don't really have to swish with iodine. It will absorb just as well by drinking it or even applying to your skin. But it's a great idea to supplement with it and don't forget the selenium to enhance the effect.
Not to be self promoting (or anything) but my most recent blog exactly speaks to your observation about religions discouraging advocacy and humanitarian actions while promoting passivity, inaction and self indulgence. A great way to take the good people of the world out of the game.
I'm convinced these interpretations are relatively recent and imposed by the ruling class on world religions for population control. But i digress.

I read how gargling/swishing with a few drops of Iodine in water helped someone who was about to have his second gum surgery, battling serious inflammation. I tried it a couple of weeks ago for a sore throat, and felt the result within hours. It makes sense to me now, thinking back when I was a child my mother used to give me Irish Moss tea to drink for sore throat when nothing else would help. It must be the worst tasting tea on the planet, but it did its job.
Today, I woke up with a pimple at my jaw and a sore spot in my mouth, cold and flu symptoms all day. Reading up on the Iodine protocol, and bromide in that context, I believe that after all these years of using a prescription level fluoride toothpaste, I probably, and inadvertently, started a very necessary fluoride detox process - unless it would really be just a cold!
Will check out your blog, yet, digressing as well, have to add that meditation as a spiritual practice is absolutely non-denominational. Many may be getting into it to ease a troubled mind and learn to cope in a reality and society that has become inhumane in so many respects. Couldn't agree more about meditation. It just so happens that God is also non-denominational. Turns out the universe was created long before there were people to believe anything about anything.

This is a reply to # 1,858,835I hate to jump in on this deep political and philosophical discussion, but I just wanted to point out that gum troubles are a common symptom of heavy metal problems. Another possible symptom could be sensitivity to fluoride. I think it's especially possible if you have or have ever had silver fillings but there are other metals and other sources.
Actually, it's possible that you are only sensitive to fluoride. Since it's in the water supply, it would be hard to avoid (even if you don't drink the water since water gets into our food in so many ways).
Are you sure your gums were receding when you took the tonic? If your gums have become semi-permanently puffy, then it's possible that the gums returning to normal may look like they are receding. I can't see your gums, so I couldn't say if this is true or not. It's just something for you to consider. You might try the tonic again and then talk to your dentist to see if she or he thinks they look better or are receding.- Re: Receding Gum Line - what to do? Shen

And yes, my gum line has been receding due to chronic inflammation for several years, and that while I don't smoke, I don't drink, I eat mostly organic, vegetarian, get my daily exercise etc. About 10 years ago, I had the Amalgams removed and done several rounds of heavy metal detox since.
The tonic seemed to work fine except for the gum around this one molar! I have no explanation as to why. I had a cleaning today and my dentist measured 7mm pockets around that tooth, plus the recession. It's very obvious to see ... However, besides that, I saw a happy hygienist who didn't have much work with plaque or built up - that's something :-)
There has not been that much puffiness, and the color of my gums is a lot healthier since I stopped using fluoride toothpaste about 2.5 months ago, so I think you make a good point bringing up fluoride sensitivity. As much as it is possible, I stopped drinking tap water when I noticed that change (and a letter to the city's water department is in the works). Also, my strong detox reaction to just swishing a few drops of Iodine for 4 days tells me there is something to it, but I am not sure what strategy could work for me right now as I find these Iodine drops and 'salt pushes' a little challenging - or does it simply take some getting used to?
I have an appointment with my kinesiologist next week, and want to discuss and test a few things with him. So, I am absolutely open to further suggestions!

This is a reply to # 1,860,913It's been a while, but as update to the previous posts: got the results from my Iodine test today, which show I am at 78%/24hrs excretion; Bromide 9.7% and Fluoride 1.3%. My practitioner gave me the 50mg Iodoral today to start the detox process!
Re gum tissue: the acute inflammation I got a handle on with brushing my teeth with Colloidal Silver soap for a few days and 3 doses of 2 ferrum phosphoricum pellets over a time span of 2 days. Not really sure what made the difference, but am happy that something did :-)
Still into oil pulling, of course!, now in combination with 100mg Ubiquinol a day.

This is a reply to # 1,872,174Hi there. I just wanted to say that I brush my teeth only once every couple of days or so. I do it gently and thoroughly with a wet toothbrush dipped in baking soda.
My diet consists of boiled whole grains like millet, brown basmati rice, boiled rye, etc, cooked greens, lemons, mostly cooked vegetables, raw pureed carrots, flax oil, and some beans and lentils, not every day.
I would floss if I were being diligent. I do think I'm making a mistake not flossing enough. I seldom floss.
Anyway, my teeth and gums look great to the dentist now. Before I ate this way (4 years ago) I had the same hygiene habits and I had stage 3 and 4 gingivitis. My dentist says the difference is "day and night". Not eating sticky foods (sugar, cheese, etc) seems to be the main thing. I also think millet is good for your mouth.
I used to use natural toothpastes, but I realized toothpaste is just consumerist crap. Baking soda is the ticket.

This is a reply to # 1,858,835I would rinse initially with 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide. Then use Colloidal Silver orally only, pulling just like you do with the oil but lay on bed, tilt head back over edge, and let the Colloidal Silver bath the tonsil area and gargle that area.... Then follow that with your oil pull...
To rebuild gums and teeth, use borax water 1/4 tsp in a quart of water....and use diatomaceous earth for the silica... These will help rebuild and remineralize your teeth and gums...

How about using homeopathic pellets and dissolve a couple of those in a small amount of water to achieve the healing effect without possible toxic side effects of Borax? Any thoughts on this?
Silica and Borax are easily available as homeopathic remedies, and I know it is an established practice for acute cases of a developing cold, for example.
My gum health has improved greatly since last year through oil pulling, a combination of supplements (borage, black currant seed oil and ubiquinol, ...) and a change of toothpaste and brushes away from fluoride etc containing toothpastes and electric toothbrush. It was too aggressive for my gums. I am using these small Japanese toothbrushes now; very soft.
I also think to have read, don't remember where, that there is a connection between thyroid and gum health; so by supporting an under-performing thyroid, I probably support my gums too. Getting there :-)
