A lot of people use flax for their omega three EFAs, but what they don't realize is that it doesn't give them the DHA that is found ONLY in fish oil. So even if people use flax seeds or oil, which are great for female hormones, they need to take or eat fish oil as well, so they get the right combo of EPA and DHA.
The best brands in termsof guaranteed safety and quality that I know of are Shaklee EPA, and the EPA that can be ordered through The Zone Diet company founded by Barry Sears. His products cannot be bought in the stores, but must be ordered online or by phone. I tried his EPA but found the Shaklee gives us more for the price. I feel both are quite safe.
There is a huge problem with PCBs and other contaminants being in most fish oil capsules sold on the market today. The burping of fish oil also is a problem with most brands bought in stores, as Laurie shared with us earlier -- her experience is common. Especially if you take the amounts most of us need each day for optimum results.
If people want to read even more about EPA and DHA and its benefits for physical, mental and emotional health, read ALL The Zone Diet books by Barry Sears. I feel he has done the most research and written about it in books the lay person can read.
Nursing mothers give their children plenty of EPA and DHA, and that is why, it is speculated, that breastfed babies have higher IQs than bottle-fed babies. There are other benefits as well, and many articles have appeared on this subject.
You also can eat sardines once or twice a week, or a large serving of salmon or herring at least three times a week, instead of taking supplements.

And by the time they were adolescents, those that had been deprived of the special omega-3 baby food were showing signs of physical quirks that have been used to predict with unusual accuracy whether human teenagers will someday be incarcerated.

I believe that flax seed does contain sufficient EFA's like the Omega (3, 6, 9) fatty acids including the unique linoleic and linolenic acids. Flax seed oil is in fact much better than fish oil being a botanical source while fish oil being an animal source may contain more unhealthy fats. Furthermore, now fish is being contaminated with pollutants. Oils from a botanical source would be better.
Check out the botanical oils at www.osumex.com and you will find the blend of oils from 7 seeds to be very good for the body and emotional stability.
