Hey Good People.
I have a Candida/Copper problem. I am taking many supplements, following a strict, selective carb diet, and consuming no sugar.
I am actively trying to bring the Candida under control. I was too aggressive in my first attempt and developed melasma. Is this due to adrenal fatigue? Some insight into why the melasma appeared suddenly would be most appreciated.
I have an embedded IUD, I've had it for nearly ten years, and I am on a waiting list to have it removed. I am aware this contributes, even perpetuates my copper problem, but I can't do anything about that right now; thanks to Socialized Medical Care.
I am taking, among other things, molybdenum, vit c, zinc and MSM. (I am referring here only to the supplements I am taking to help with melasma, although I am taking many more for digestive concerns, candida overgrowth and friendly-flora re-population)
I have tried HQ, Kojic acid, Retin A (made it darker!) and clobetasol (also made it darker)
I have stopped all lightning products and I am not using Retin A anymore at this time. I read somewhere that the Retin A "brings forth" the buried dark pigmentation-and I admit these last five years I have baked my skin with the exception of this year. My first day at the beach and *bam* the 'tashe appeared.
I have learned that chemical sunblock can make it worse, and by the look of things I have dermal melasma. I have not seen a dermatologist, because again, there is a long waiting list. I use a physical sunblock made by Avene, and avoid the sun as much as I can.
Tonight I am going to try castor oil
I will update often, and in great detail so that I may help others, if I do find a way to rid my face of this blight.
That all said, I have had vitiligo on my chin for more than 15 years. It's re-pigmenting :) Something good, something not so good.
Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,986,449This is the opposite of your melasma but, I developed a small round white skin pigmentation over the right side of my thyroid. It started as a pin prick a couple years back but, once things got overly stressed this year from candida treatment it has gotten bigger to about the size of a small pea. My Dr said it was nothing to be concerned about when I showed it to him but, it's just another sign of how stress has thrown things further out of balance.
If we could only treat our conditions in hindsight back to when we were much healthier ..... wouldn't that be great?

This is a reply to # 1,986,637By the way is the small white spots skin fungus maybe. My fiancee has it and the spots can be dark or light. It's on his torso and has made it's way up his neck on his face. What is exposed to light more is not hardly visible. This is pretty common especially if you swim in a lake. A lot of people have it and carry for years.

This is a reply to # 1,986,742the fungus you're referring to is called tinea versicolor~and sadly, no this is not what I have. My ex husband had that and got an anti fungal cream for it which I tried and had no effect. What's more, the dermatologist looked at it with a Wood's Lamp. It is definitely vitiligo. I'd be apt to think the melasma like formation on my upper lip is Tinea versicolor, for it appeared over night.
What I find really interesting is the vitiligo is and has been re pigmenting for years. I mean ten or more years. Recently and more importantly when I got the dark upper lip, that's when my vitiligo really picked up speed on re pigmenting. I can barely see the spot on my throat, but I think that is a good enough reason to get my thyroid checked.

This is a reply to # 1,986,449I have been fighting Melasma for 4 years now. It it what got me started with a copper detox doing almost the exact same things as you molybdenum, vit c, zinc and MSM. I did get some lightening. I have been detoxing for over a year with vast improvements to my AF. It has been well worth it. I think also the Melasma is due to a hormonal imbalance but that is also caused my AF. Copper raises your estrogen levels. The Zinc and detox will bring copper and estrogen back down. I also got migraines and they are gone now.
I have also gone through a series of medium level peels. I think I have done six. Got very little improvement. I was wondering about Meladerm. Have you tried that?
Before all this I had beautiful even colored skin.
I am 46 and my hormones levels are changing also because of age and not just AF. But then you see these 50 year old women with perfect even tans. So what is different about their bodies?

No i have not tried that, but I have mixed HQ, Retin A kojic acid and steroid cream. I'm pretty certain that if that didn't work, meladerma isn't going to either.
I have this stupid IUD for ten years...why all of a sudden the melasma? I can't help but wonder what did I do that caused this to happen overnight? I went to the beach ONE DAY. I wore sunscreen and a hat.
Logic tells me that when attempted to cure my candida overgrowth I stressed out my adrenals.
I hate thinking that I may have a damaged liver.

This is a reply to # 1,986,760Don't be so hard on yourself. Part of it is ageing too. As we age our estrogen goes down. Throw stress on top of that and the systems start to have problems. The copper in the IUD started to overwelm you. Keep in mind that you might have had more stress leaving your body less able to handle the copper. Stress slows down our systems and those systems are responsible for detoxing. So we fill up with toxins and that adds to more stress. The candida love copper and toxins. The more healing I do the more in control my candida is. 3 years ago I constantly had a yeast infection, now it's so much more under control.
I have been doing castor oil too. I don't think it's lightening anything but I do notice I have a bright glow in the morning after putting it on before bed.

The night before last I used Kojic Acid. I saw lightening over night. The castor oil made me get little red bumps.

This is a reply to # 1,986,755Gosh I know it. I obsessed on this for so long. Then I started getting little wrinkles and lost muscle tone so I have a little sagging. Others don't notice but I do. I finally just had switch my focus to recover from the AF since I had a whole lot of other symptoms. I am getting close to recovering and I thought my skin would improve more with getting better. I do have a lot of lighter spots but its uneven. Hang in there.

I researched and googled into the night.
Some people on several forums came to the same conclusions (although they are skincare forums not Health Forums ) and some people are using stuff like Lotramin and Canesten on their melasma...and seeing it fade bigtime
So. Two days ago I tried it.
And it's lightened by I'd say ten percent. I can't say for sure that is what it is. I am not using any other topicals. Not even Castor oil or Kojic Acid.
I went from crying about it two days ago to minimal make up and just saying "F@*K it" and being myself and doing the thing.(with sunblock of course)
I think the adage "your attitude determines your altitude" is really how life works. I began a meditation program that focuses on positive thinking for good health. Last night I listened to the meditation for 2 hours. I awoke feeling serene and some how satisfied I knew the answers.
I went and bought some hemp seed oil to add to my corrective regime.
I didn't know the sag and loss of muscle tone in my face was a sign of AF.
When I was really sick last year and the year before my face was thin and drawn. I ate little (as I didn't know what to eat, i was allergic to so much) and I was shoveling snow 12-14 hrs a day. My poor adrenal glands. What was I doooing???
I have gained volume and my skin is firmer now. I just thought it was the weight loss. Now I know it was more than that!
I feel the ground gaining firmness beneath me. I'm getting somewhere, it's just taking forever!

Shoveling snow 12 - 14 hours a day, no wonder. That is extremely hard work. You must have some upper body muscle! Yeah I had gone through tons of stress and was staying up to late and hiking a lot when my AF hit me. At the same time I was taking in tons of copper foods. I am close to getting over the AF but it's been three years of research and trying different things. Fianlly I started a copper detox and general detox and that has been by salvation. Meditation has been a great for me too. I am glad you found something that will help you.
I did try the fungal route a year ago or so ago, but I was using castor oil and ACV. I thought that would kill fungus. Maybe not you never know. I am going to the store and getting the Lotimin and Canesten and give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

This is a reply to # 1,986,449I went through a very similar journey. I got rid of my melasma and it has not come back. There are a lot of laser treatments out there but I did A LOT of research and found one that is more advanced. Treatment was painless and there was no down time. There is a website and a facebook page with more info both called 'life without melasma' and there is a separate twitter page called 'be melasma free' where you can ask questions directly and download a free guide. I hope this helps.
