The good new is there is a selective prebiotic that increases the levels of Bifidobacterium species in the human colon, Lactulose.

Summary
There is a growing consensus on the beneficial effects of bifidobacteria in human health. It is now clear that bifidobacteria that exist in the large intestine are helpful for maintenance of human health and are far more important thanLactobacillus acidophilus as beneficial intestinal bacteria throughout human life. In other words, the reduction or disappearance of bifidobacteria in the human intestine would indicate an “unhealthy” state. Oral administration of bifidobacteria may be effective for the improvement of intestinal flora and intestinal environment, for the therapy of enteric and hepatic disorders, for stimulation of the immune response, and possibly for the prevention of cancer and slowing the aging process. However, for consistent and positive results further well-controlled studies are urgently needed.

"The title of this group is Candidiasis, but many people who have been here a while, and done some research of their own, will probably agree with me that the condition is perhaps better described as dysbiosis. Candida is a major pathogen in dysbiosis, but it is not alone. There are many species of gram negative bacteria that are pathogenic. These gram negative bacteria create endotoxins which can cause symptoms not unlike candida. There are also nasty protozoa. Although starving and killing Candida may temporarily relieve some symptoms, in most cases it is unlikely to totally resolve the situation because it is not addressing the underlying problem.
The underlying problem is a lack of good bacteria. The most common cause of lack of good bacteria is Antibiotics . You see good bacteria are not just good because of the benefits they provide to the body in terms of nutrients, but they also keep the bad bacteria and yeast under control. How they do this is not fully understood, but some ways are by creating lactic acid, acetic acid and butyric acid, which the yeast and gram negative bacteria don’t like. Antibiotics wipe out whole species of good bacteria, and the balance of bowel flora changes in favour of the bad guys (including Candida), and we have the condition of dysbiosis.
Now there are lots of species of good bacteria (not to mention all the strains within each species), but I believe that generally speaking, the main good guys are Bifidobacterium, hence the topic of this essay.
Why do I think Bifidobacterium in particular are so important? Well, most of the scientific research seems to point in that direction. Let me give you some examples.

I hope by now you are thinking “How do I increase my Bifidobacteria?”. One way is with prebiotics such as FOS and Inulin.

Which is better, Inulin or FOS? There is some debate on this. FOS seems to stimulate more species of Bifidobacteria, but it may also feed more species of bacteria in general (not just Bifidobacteria).

How much FOS or Inulin do I need to eat? Well the downside of FOS and Inulin is that it produces gas (flatulence). The good news is that you don’t need to take much. In fact studies seem to indicate high intake of inulin is not necessary to raise Bifidobacterium levels. 2.5g twice a day may be a tolerable and beneficial dose for most people.

Now you may well see the limitation of simply taking FOS/Inulin to increase your Bifidobacteria. It will only increase the numbers of species of Bifidobacteria that already exist in your bowel. It cannot increase numbers of species that are extinct, due to Antibiotics ! This is where probiotics can play a role. Commercial probiotics do not take up permanent residence in the bowel, but do hang around and multiply for a week or two, so if you keep taking a good source of Bifidobacteria, and you feed them with FOS/Inulin, you should improve things.
How can you permanently restore healthy levels of many different species and strains of Bifidobacteria (and other good bacteria)? The only way I know this can be done is with Fecal Bacteriotherapy, or Human Probiotic Infusion (HPI). If you are thinking yuk, then you are on the right track!

hey bazilianguy im currently dealing with this particular issue. Bifidobacterium is obviously depleted if we been using antifungal remedies because antifungal remedies kill Bifido.
Now The colon holds the most bacteria in the body, way more than the small intestine so it would make since to repopulate the bifido. the problem is bifido and laco bacteria cant colonize without a clean intestine. so i been using vsl3 to clear the path in my intestine followed up by some colonizing kefir.
i use nystatin enemas only to keep candida down while i repopulate because as of late nystatin caused my Clostridia to rise because candida competes with it.

This is a reply to # 2,196,084im not brazilianguy but i would take in any sugar/polysaccharides,FOS/MOS or even fiber because those all get fermented by candida and other pathogens. you first have to eat a boring diet and move out the candida and replace the candida with probiotic seeds so to speak. once the probitics out number the pathogens then introduce fiber back into the diet to see your reaction. if you get healthier, then that means you have changed the ratio of bacteria. This is a reply to # 2,196,092Thanks for your reply commonknowledge! I am on a raw food diet for almost 3 months now. It is very hard and i am losing weight even more. But i a have leaky gut and when i take probiotics then my body will react like crazy. I cant't handle the glutamine also. I have been on Antibiotics for 8 years strict when i was a baby till 8 years old. It began when i was 7 days old. To freaky!
But maybe i can handle the probiotic enema. Sometimes i think that i have candida everywhere in every fiber and bloodcell. Have you ever done an enema? Like Coffee-Enema or something?- Re: Role of Bifidobacterium in human... commonknowledge

well raw food is hard to digest so it usually doesnt even get to digest in the small bowel, it gets pushed to the colon to be digested by candida. I wouldnt do raw food until candida is under control.
candida's toxins are a pain too, they flow through out the body making you think its everywhere. candida can also grow roots that grow upward in the body too.
but if you have leaky gut from gut pathogens then what your eating is just leaking through your gut wall causing reactions with histamine. adding probiotics to the picture adds even more histamine which causes a reaction. probiotics ALSO will causes die off which also causes histamine release. so its a histamine party until you bring down your pathogens.. I took Antibiotics for years too for Acne so i know where your coming from.
but 8 years is a hella long time... I do Coffee-Enema daily because i have other infections in my body. Coffee-Enema is the best enema to me because it detoxifies the liver and it irrates pathogens/bugs and pulls them out of the colon. i do probiotic enemas too but i do those as retention enemas only.- Re: Role of Bifidobacterium in human... Thanks for your reaction. Are you on a histamine free diet? Did you cure your leaky gut yet? Tomorrow i'll start using the Coffee-Enema and water enema. I lost a lot of weight so far, so I ate pumpkin soup today, eventhough I shouldn't eat it since I have been following the anti-canfida diet for the last two months. I'm really curieus about your diet. If I'd do a probiotic enema, would it matter what probiotic i'd use so the candida doesn't feed of it? And does the Coffee-Enema also kill good bacteria? I can't wait for the muscus to come out so I can get to the leaky gut and candida.

Whenever I use glutamine I get the feeling that my body needs to fight. Like the stuff is going straight through the bowel into my body, or feeding the candida. Whenever I eat something 'wrong' I get depressed. And I've been so for many years due to bad eating. I haven't used slippery elm yet, but I'll give it a try. Did you use it?

This is a reply to # 2,196,189pumpkin soup feeds candida for sure. Candida eats all fiber/sugar derivatives.
My diet is fiber free, mostlye bone broth(for collegen/glycine), soup style chicken(boiled), egg yolks, beef soup, homemade(kefir,yogurt,sourcream).
I eat All healing foods for the gut basically.
My leaky gut is better, but I feel something keeps opening it up. I obviously have a hidden infection bothering my gut lining. As far as histamine what I did to get rid of it is take a therapeutic strength probiotic to knock down pathogens in the small bowel then I take a probiotic that colonizes the gut like homemade kefir. The histamine producing bacteria gets knocked down doing that process. Coffee-Enema don't kill bacteria and even if it did I take kefir daily that works its way down to the colon anyway. probiotic enemas are useful but usually late at night before bed because my daily enemas would wipe out my retention enema. Glutamine immediately causes the immune system to replicate white blood cells and creates a immune response right away, glutamine also hral the gut but can cause mania and Depression with people with candida because of Candida's toxins(depressed/anxiety,mania)- Re: Role of Bifidobacterium in human... destinii

On the leaky gut forum, some say you must eat high fiber, others say no fiber. Then it is high fat low carb, then you'll read no fat high carb. It makes me crazy sometimes. Bought aqua kefir yesterday to brew it at home, hopefully this will not give me a hystamine reaction.
I see that you almost only eat meat products, is this the best way to heal the candida and the leaky gut? I even eat sh*t if it cures this terrible disease. Meat is difficult for me after 10 years but if it heals then it must be

Cause of this poor diet you make your body weaker, and its already weak casue of candidasis. Candida diet is nessesery, but please, stop being a vegetarian for some time if you really want to be cured... Meat, eggs etc. re important and you can eat them as much you want while dealing with candida infection.

well for a vegetarian it may be hard to cure because pathogens metabolise fiber into glucose for energy to grow. Meat products create amino acids for the body especially for the liver the detox organ. i gain most of my
diet ideas from GAPS DIET, WESTON PRICE DIET and the SCDiet and they mostly say that fiber is hard to digest basically. fiber is hard to digest, is hard on the gut lining, feed pathogens, delays healing. If you juice the vegatables then thats a option to get out of the fiber trap. Fat heals the body, protein builds the tissues and probiotics build all the flora in the body basically. kefir will cause histamine reaction from die off, plus the lacto bacteria produce lactic acid which causes histamine reaction. but what i was saying is you have to get through that cycle of histamine to heal. U have to take a very strong probiotic 100 billion+ to carve a path for the kefir bacteria to colonize then the histamine response will go away. the histamine in tolerance will go away with all foods. then when the gut heals you can eat anything absolutely.- Re: Role of Bifidobacterium in human... longterm

This is a reply to # 2,196,246i use two kinds of probiotics theraputic strength and natural kefir from kefir grains that actually colonize your gut.
theraputic strengths are kirland labs, klaire probiotic, progurt, and vsl3 and vsl3 double strength.
all the theraputic probiotics cost $70 dollars and up. So best thing to do is get a prescription for the vsl3 double strength and have your insurance pay for it. you cant get insurance claims on the other probiotics.
I personally take the vsl3 and vsl3 DS.
Specific Carb diet has more flexibility than the intro diet on GAPS. Eliminating process carbohydrates allows the body to heal at every level. process carbs leads to insulin overuse, cancer, and heart disease. SCdiet over the years will build your gut flora that will proctect you from diseases, keep you younger, and give a better quality of life. eating shitty food takes the spark out of everyone.- Re: Role of Bifidobacterium in human... longterm

This is a reply to # 2,196,246Why not to feed the indigenous flora instead of paying a lot of money for pharmaceutical grade probiotics ?? The pharmaceutical are transient organisms. They disappear from the intestines one time you stop supplementing. Their benefit is only temporary.

This is a reply to # 2,196,258well i personally cannot take prebiotics because my gut has more pathogens than actual beneficial bacteria so i will cause more overgrowth.
but, ive learned its better first to run out pathogens by not feeding them and taking a very strong transient probiotic like vsl3. vsl3 drives out pathogens, helps seal gut lining, and helps organize gut microbes. Behind the vsl3 doses i eat many kefir grains and kefir to repopulate my gut. If i take kefir grains without vsl3 theres typically no "space" avaiable on the gut lining if occupied by pathogens. vsl3 removes these pathogens...

This is a reply to # 2,196,261You cannot make "space" in the colon by taking probiotics. It does not work that way. kefir is no better at colonizing than any other probiotic, it is more likely to be worse.
Most bacteria in the colon protect themselves with biofilms and not much can get through to displace them. Bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses and possibly parasites go through the colon continually and very rarely have any effect on the colon flora. If they get a chance then they will take up an opening but that rarely arises. Even anti biotics don't usually affect the colon flora because biofilms are mostly resistant to them.
The colon flora is very static and rarely changes. However removing food sources could cause the colon flora to change which are the ideas behind GAPS and SCD. However, it's a slow process.
Oh BTW leaky gut is a very deceptive idea because it's not usually the gut that is the primary location for the increased permeability.
You are never likely to solve Increased Intestinal Permeability Syndrome (IIPS) aka leaky gut with probiotics! Biofilm busting procedures is the only thing which is likely to solve it.
The GAPS diet does have components to deal with biofilms but it is not very targeted IMO. However many of the components are very healing but it could do with more help.
