It's more contagious than that. It is carried by some barely visible creatures called rotifers that can dry up into dust particles, their offspring fall from the sores on a sufferers body, and are carried by the wind. Rotifers are Everywhere, but it seems that some of them have become quite viciously parasitic, (hich is old news to biologists). Rotifers also collect DNA samples from their hosts, so their own genome contains the DNA of many species. This might explain why the fibers contain multiple types of DNA.
