Hello all fellow health-seekers - thank you kindly for taking the time to read my post. I would really appreciate advice. I'm back fasting lol.
I am on day 3 of my second 30 day fast and have done lots of shorter fasts.
My first thirty day fast I entered very lean underweight bmi (5'6" and 113lbs), and had really been tapering down my eating having just a few mouthfuls of fresh fruit and veg for many days prior.
By day 29.5 I broke it due to having deathly low weight. That was oct 31st last yr... All my muscle waisted to skin and bone and I was severely protein/b12/folate/iron/everything deficient.
I vowed to fast again, so although having a terrible refeeding struggle I did lots of weights and excercise to get to a strong muscular 127lbs, with a body fat % of 19... Mediocre compared to most, but good for fasting.
My issue is this.... During my re-feed and bulk in preparation for my fast I have experienced sever water retention issues, to the extent that I swell up everywhere - hands, ankles, feet, face, lips, eyes, and gut. I look very awful, like I have been bashed and any definition I have disappears. It happens like every 10 days or so... I'm not sure what the trigger is... Possible after a long 9km run, or long weight set, or eating something that doesn't agree with me... But here is the problem; I had about 2 weeks of academic work just prior to my fast that I needed to smash over before I fasted. It took a nightmare stessfull week where I ate abnormally more, and probably, slightly more indulgent than I'm used to. I swelled up to 132lbs... Not overweight but heavier than I've been. So I had a week to get myself into shape for my fast. I ran 9km every other day and lifted heavy big reps until after 2 days I was suddenly 121lbs.... I suspected I had shifted a huge amount of water weight - possibly aided by my eating large amounts of watermelon...I continued my excercise and threw in one more huge work out and massive run, but otherwise keeping to 4.5km and medium reps/weight, eating moderately.
But it suddenly rushed back! All of it! (Could it have been my muscles drawing in water to repair?) So I entered my fast at around 129lbs but mainly water from all my swelling. Day 3 and the water isn't going!
I drink about 2L day... Usual. But my body is just hanging on to water!!! Why? And isn't this going to effect my fast detox abilities?
I'm already feeling like this fast is more taxing than last fast: I think primarily because of higher weight and water retention. Walking around is already tiring and I'm already lazy and lathargic, where as last time I was working on the car, the truck, walking a few km every day, here there and everywhere... My partner suggest to recalibrate and then re-enter the fast... But I'm stubburnly hoping this fast WILL BE the recalibration I'm after...
Can anyone shed some light? I will wait for answers while I sit here, swollen, puffy like I've eaten five course meals - even though I've not eaten in 3 days...

I agree with your husband. It is a good idea to stop and get some potassium in your body. Obviously you have one of your organ not functioning properly.
If you do not wish to stop your fast, I would suggest to get potassium chloride, put it in warm bath (1 cup) and stay in the bath for 45 minutes.

I read the link, it was very thorough and explanatory. A very good read.
So... I'm in two minds. I'm going to try to do the potassium chloride bath... If I can find the stuff without waiting weeks to have it shipped from ebay or iherb. Where would I find it? agri shops or chemists? Tomorrow I will hunt around for it...
Would a juvenile coconut help the matter?... I'm trying to avoid that as it will corrupt the integrity of my fast. Strangely I was jamming up on potassium foods for a good while prior to my fast, so maybe my exercise and academic stress or whatnot has leached this from my body...
My second thought is... I'm starting to think my old frenemy hypoproteinemea might be back to haunt me. I was pushing my body pretty hard and I might not have given it adequate protein supplies... Then I suddenly fast. My body might have slipped below the threshold of healthy protein levels... In which case I may start some catabolic/muscle eating metabolising which may lead to another skin and bones scenario... Would it steady up in my fast do you think?
I'm not sure if it's my organs. I had tests and scans late December/early jan that seed to show I was ok... Bit low on folate and b12 but I had made it out of clinical deficiency.
I'm pretty keen to do this fast as soon as I can. I actually know my prep was rushed and I needed more time to get into shape for fasting following my academic hiatus. I'm too pushed for time. I have allowed 1.5 months to refeed then end of may I have other religious commitments that require my full-100% health. Arrghh.
Maybe try the wait and see approach, have a K-soak... See if I get better... If not I'm going to have to *think/consider* seriously terminating my fast...
Are there any other signs to differentiate between lack of protein and lack of potassium?

Knowing your diet, protein is not an issue. I only eat fruits and vegetables, since birth, I don't have protein deficiency.
Dr. Shelton wrote about rushing and fasting with fears. He suggestes not to fast in those conditions. Usually when kidney does not get rid of sodium and the capillaries are not bringing the water back to the blood then edema happens.
You can find KCL at Amazon or iHerb. Also if you have Epsom Salts soak your feet in warm water with ES and a small amount of H2O2. Do this twice a day. Magnesium in ES also helps Edema.
Lastly, you can make a paste with parsley, turmeric and mustard oil (castor oil or olive oil works) and apply it to your feet and other areas where you have swelling.
Kapalbhati is a breathing exercise that can help as well.

This is a reply to # 2,357,250Yes it's a big diff entering a fast knowing I rushed and wasn't quite ready.
I've never experienced severe protein deficiency before either except after that last prolonged fast... I was racking my brains trying to figure out what was wrong until dear doctor informed me... Was just thinking since I was putting my body into an anabolic state but possibly not eating the protein to support that.
It's tricky finding KCl here... And getting it shipped will take a while. The puffiness is slowly lessening. I might just tough it out and just call it a rough fast and try my hardest to hang in there. Although my hubs pretty reluctant to let me go the full 30 days. So staying healthy will enable me to go longer.
Will jump onto those remedies.

I've got ES on hand to use, and turmeric so I can start on them. I will make a few calls today to locate the KCL locally. Apparently I look to be in good/better health, as if I'm not even fasting but I am feeling a bit lacklustre. My sleep is severely effected. I inhale lavender, vetiver and vararian root organic essential oils to no effect. Seem to be sleeping only 3 or so hours. Hub says this will be the demise of my fast as it will prematurely wear my body out over the remaining 25 days and consume my reserves. So currently finding insomnia remedies so I can remain strong for the remaining time.

Wikipedia says yes. Produce store says it's possible that I'd be needing a food grade thing...
Is this fine?
And what about diatomaceous earth food grade?
I'm kinda not needing it as much, but still kinda wanting to do it to see if it improves my fast.
Does anyone know about soaking in potash and how much is ok to soak in.
Apparently it's some pink sandy looking stuff.

This is a reply to # 2,357,399Potash is fine to soak in, but like all things unknown to you and your body, start small and build slow. I suggest you to add two tablespoons in 4 cups of warm water and soak your feet. If you have any tingling sensation remove your feet and dry it immediately. If it works, you can increase the amount.
I would not worry too much about sleep. This is one symptom we faster s cannot do much about. I do feel better by rubbing peppermint or lavender oil on my forehead, behind the ears and chest, which made me sleep better.
I also would not worry about day 30, I would only think about today. If you get to day 30 fine, if not, also good because you cleaned your body and mind. Then there is always another time.

This is a reply to # 2,357,203my feeling about this, just intuitively, is that the body is retaining water, and perhaps even drawing it from the air, to encapsulate some toxins that it is not finding itself able to excrete/dispose of, rapidly enough. i think of the body as an intelligent system that knows how to protect itself from harm.
i would probably sip water, as desired, even if that seems counterintuitive. but don't overdrink, either. rather than get anxious about holding onto it, and just wait it out.
i would also not exercise, but rest or do some
gentle walking, and lots of relaxed breathing
i would learn and do " faster eft" for anything that comes to mind over the oedema.. it can begin to be a self-fulfilling state, based on nervousness...
i would re-read Shelton and or purinton...
the faster eft, see my post a ways down the page. really clears a lot of the emotion/thoughts.
i tend to feel the body will come to a state of equilibrium and start to let go of what it,s holding onto, the more you relax and trust it, but as is said, fear is a big contraindication. to water fasting, so i'd do the faster eft...
there can be a hidden edema, that Water Fasting might bring up.. precisely because your cells are trying to release waste.... and to come to harmony. i like to remind myself
i don't need to micro-manage what is otherwise very wise, naturally. imv, it,s probably all fine, unless you panic and drive yourself nuts.
please consider the faster eft tapping...

Yes I was just discussing EFT with the hubs and how I needed to get onto it. He believes that I entered my fast in a rushed stressed state and unless I let go, it will stay that way and I will retain water as an inflammatory response to my stress. Lol...
I'm not exercising at all, bar leisurely strolls. I have noticed I can't sleep too well, while usually I can rest well during a fast. As you said might be holding onto stresses. I *do* defs have a bad nasty habit of putting pressure on myself, so I should probably let go of it.
I will see the fasting EFT threads, for sure. As well as the suggestions from Archus.
Praying I don't have to stop my fast.

This is a reply to # 2,357,237wow, your husband sounds very perceptive. what a blessing...i can imagine him seeming to know more than you about how you entered the wfast could be a bit of a ... oh, i don,t know, maybe something to tap on. lol
i am involved with ( student of) a modality that daily suggests we first get neutral to everything the partner says, thinks and does, and, doesn,t say, think or do... that covers the entire spectrum of extremes. it,s amazing how all the tiny meaningless stuff in that accumulates into irritation, maybe, etc., when it is nothing, whatsoever.
clearing the extremes covers a lot, and can bring an enormous peace... where no one is at fault. independence and coexistence, while being close. sounds perfect. the opposite of stress, yes.?

He was healthy for years while I was having a triple shot coffee to wash my 6 nodoz pills down for uni he is much more advanced than me and has uncanny intuition like he somehow just knows. He is totally heaven-sent and has my back more than I have my own! Very perceptive of the tiny fragmented molecules that make up life! And what tiny elements can impact life's balances. A natural healer... Lol
With him I'm like water and flow his way as much as I can, and try to be his firm support when he needs (he's independent and it's just the thought that counts)... He knows me better than I do.
I have learnt that my stubborn determination always succumbs to his ways as he is almost always right lol. I have no problem submitting to his wisdom <3 So far he is letting the fast go on, but has just today noticed that I need to slow down in weight loss otherwise I'll end up like last time. He's keeping his eyes out on me... Very loving... Bless him.
Yes- exactly.. Extreme anything is not right. My religion teaches moderation in all that is beneficial and keeping away from that which is bad.
I do need to practice releasing and letting go. Each night before I sleep I forgive every single soul and wish well for ever single soul, seek forgiveness for my shortcomings, and give thanks for all I've recieved. It helps amazingly and I sleep like I'm actually out of my body... The more sincere the better; even forgiving people on the street who make rude remarks, or things from childhood, mistakes people made years ago....
One thing I can't do is forgive myself. I'm too embarrassed. That's why I hang on to things with too much determination that's a bit extreme because I know it will grate on my soul if I fail. I'm learning but I'm not too good at it.
Modality sound like something I should tap into hehehe...

This is a reply to # 2,357,203Hello everyone! I believe I have solved the matter completely and am writing to share my own cure.
Prior to this I was feeling horrendous.
-extremely lathargic like day 27 of a baad baad fast
-constantly thirsty, drinking good amount but would need to urinate after just a few sips and very very frequent, even during the night!
-crampy legs
-dry awful mouth (not generally like the fasting one)
-racing thoughts of everything unable to switch off
-insomnia despite being exhausted
-nasty and puffy everywhere
All of the above were not me one bit especially this early in a fast.

How would I know what I'm imbalanced or deficient on?
Then I concocted my own plan. My partner was called away in business so not potash or Himalayan salt (only Celtic but we usually have HS)
I lined up many glasses of water in preparation.
In each I put a tiny amount- between a pinch and a 1/4 tsp.
-first was bicarb
-one I put calcium powder
-one I put Epsom Salts
-diatomaceous earth food grade (not sure if this was 100% necessary but it's high in minerals)
-one drop potassium iodine
I let them sit for 45 mins then I had them one by one. I would sip the first over 10 mins, then wait 45 mins then sip the next for 10 mins and repeat.
I felt instantly better. No frequent trips to bathroom, relaxed, and genuinely tired.
Not long after I got mag chloride spray oil and massaged my calves, tummy and arms (as I get a rash on my chest and back) - with a good amount.
Then my little one offered to massage my back with essential oils to help everything move through.
I slept amazing. No insomnia, no racing thoughts, no human seive passing water...
I'm going to have an Epsom Salt bath today and possibly repeat my drinks in another 3 days, but yesterday before my cure I was so awful I couldn't manage it - tbh.
I do feel this hasn't compromised my Water Fast too much and I'm happy to continue. It was very very quick acting. Symptoms just dissapeared!

I am glad to hear that you are feeling good. Hope your edema has gone.
I am learning new things. I am a strong believer of nothing but water when you fast. But now reading a lot that mineralized water is beneficial.
I watched a video on YouTube, Dr. Casser allows his fasting patients some salt water and a few herbal teas, he says that you will not get out of Ketosis with these elements.
I have to try this in my next fast.

I would be careful of teas... Very digestive, would lead muscle wasting.
I do believe water is the best, but I am almost certain that the minerals I had on those small amounts would not activate a non-fasting system, but allow it to maintain.
I did soak my feet for hours in ES and potash and it seems to be ok. Still recovering and getting better and better. And maintaining the Himalayan salt for now.

I would not do salt but replace it with minerals.
Correction, I meant I will try mineral drops in my water next fast. I don't believe in drinking teas, it is partial feeding and leads to starvation.

This is a reply to # 2,357,726Yes. I'd agree. I think it's also best to take them 2 weeks prior every day leading up to the fast. From what I can tell so far those 2, even three weeks before a fast will dictate a lot how the fast will be.
From what I can tell - entering a fast lean is easier but ones condition tapers off making it difficult towards the end, and refeeding... Starting a fast a few kgs heavier than ones usual weight (but not overweight) is more difficult to begin with, but ones general condition is more enduring through out the fast. Entering day 8... Over the quarter way mark... thanks to God!

archus, i have never fasted with distilled water only, always used the spring water. but i am wondering now... i always craved spring water on a fast, but for nonFasting, i have been drinking distilled water for a few months now, and honestly feel it might be the better water. i,m changing my mind about lots of things.
what would a pure distilled Water Fast be like, i wonder. and do i even need to do one of these...
as Shelton used to suggest, fast as little as is needed. i ma interested in breatharianism, and something called the master fast system, which looks like a good intro to living on prana, or at least, having the clear choice to eat or not to eat.

like, i used to feel so sure distilled water leeched minerals from the body, and now i feel it actually removes the wrong sort, and ONLY these. and that we are meant to get minerals only from our food. plant based.
and did you know this, this is not fasting talk, but for offFasting, herbal infusions are the best sort of mineral supplements, is the druits and veg don!t do it.
a quart of nettle infusion for example, if you google it. wow. and oatstraw, alfalfa, red clover...
i,ve been tuning into susun weed again lately. good videos.
my mother did some courses with her, back when i was a few decades younger.

This article you posted does not tell us a lot. It would have been very helpful to know the herbs they have prescribed, which the doc is not going to give up since it will be challenged and people will do it on their own, he would lose his clients.
Also the article does not tell you what kind of illnesses or condition her body was in prior to the fast and after. We don't know what her starting weight was and post fast weight was, either. I would love to see her simple blood and urine tests. I am sure she had some benefits from fasting but we do not know what was compromised.
As per true fasting rules that is starvation. You are eating partially, and your body uses all nutritional reserves to digest and be in balance, vs. to water only fast body starts using fats, scar tissues and other junk to function, and the most important part is that uses all its energy to heal and clean. Digestion uses the most energy in bodily functions.
Dr. Goldhammer and Dr. Furhman would have fights with Dr. Liu if they met and discussed this protocol.
Enh! If someone wants to lose weight fast this may be a way, but I would still just fast with water only to lose same amount of weight in two weeks.

This is a reply to # 2,358,068Oh, for sure. I'm totally against anything on a fast but I am curious by this just for the nature of the protcol... Not that I think it's superior to Water Fasting by any stretch. What frustrates me is because some big wow-TCM doctor made her drink black tea and herb mix, it's all good and except able enough for even our donkey prime minister Malcone turnbul to do.... But when I do a safer more pure water fast, everyone accuses me of having an eating disorder. It's a joke, but also very very awful having to constantly defend yourself from having a mental disorder - and I never even fast to loose weight I'm not overweight. Societies double standards... So hypocrital it's actually sickening.
I do want to know what is in those herbs... But I guess I won't know (except bitter/liver/kidney tonic) I will call the AusTCM wholesalers... They always let out secrets lol.
The black tea (caffine) would be totally messing up their adrenals. It's probably just to mask the nasty detox symptoms. Most of the people doing it wouldn't be living clean to start with (just after a quick fix) so when they do it they'd be feeling like hell - the black tea would just cover it up nicely, all the while hurting their cortisol and nervous system. I'm so not for this type of thing. It's interesting how many gurus want to take the perfect cure of Water Fasting and adulterate it supposedly to make it more copeable but inadvertadly cause more damage.
Curious about cupping on a fast... What are your thoughts?

Nice to hear from you. The water alkalinity and what is good for you is big controversy. The most important part is to get the impurities out of water. I have done a few tests on my own for water pH and have water tested in labs. Distilled water from supermarkets were acidic from 5.0 to 6.0 pH. I think the home distillers would give you a better pH.

i think i ought to give the Water Fast a try on only distilled. just for the pure experience. i used to really love the taste of spring water, but now i can relate to Victor Truviano, who speaks of how at a certain point even water (Spring water) tasted like "drinking a mountain" ... just very heavy in the system. granted, his system was very refined by this point...
i quite like the distilled i am getting from the spring water company, but am feeling making it myself would be nice, and is the next step. i haven,t drunk tap water for at least a decade, close to fifteen years. I would certainly boil it first, then want to decant it, after it sitting, if i couldn't get the spring water.. i almost never get sick, not for ages, and i am finally, just in the past few months, coinciding with drinking only distilled, feeling like my pineal gland is coming back online.
i thought i would find it too acidic, but am feeling more limber also, so i think it is grabbing and chelating some inorganic minerals....( when i have bought the gallon jugs distilled before from the store they felt to me acidic, but these five gallon jugs feel good. i have not tested)
i'm loving the idea right now of having more herbal infusions, and less actual plain water. that will probably change as it gets warmer.
i am drinking less of it than i did the spring water, and feel more inclined to get water from my food...
which seems to make sense.

By all means please try a fast with distilled water. I have done a few fasts with distilled water, and didn't see a big difference, as well as found out that it was pH 5.0 water I was drinking I stopped using it. I used to get a local supermarket brand, it was a rip off. I too want to purchase a distiller with ozonating capabilty. Dr. Robert Rowen talks about ozonated water and its therapeutic value.
If I find a good source of distilled water, I am going to give it a try for regular use.
