Tooth pulling versus filling is a question that depends on a couple factors, particularly: How old are you? What is you state of disease/wellness? How many Amalgams do you have?

As per your second question, yes you could schedule an appointment and say I'm concerned about this and want to consider having my tooth pulled, but I would not go to just any Dentist. A general family practice Dentist would probably not be open to such things or even do the work for if you put a gun to his/her head.

You need somebody open to the issue of mercury poisoning due to amalgam, and as it stands right now, typically only hollistic or biological dental practices would be.

Don't get stuck on doing things fastest or cheapest. Do your research now because you could be replacing one problem with another. Understand what problems you will have with missing teeth or false teeth, or implants. Missing tooth sockets can cause infection and tooth migration. An implant will cost thousands, take months, and use foreign materials. Composite fillings often need replacement, and every time your tooth is drilled for a filling you lose natural tooth material. Being too cheap or underinformed will cost you the more in the long run, in money and in health.
