Several months ago I was diagnosed as having cervical osteoarthritis. The first time I suspected it, was about 7 years ago. I was on vacation when I developed excruciating pain in my neck which radiated down my right arm causing numbness. Fortunately, I was able to go to a branch office of my HMO in another state. The doctor said it was cervical osteoarthritis and it was causing a pinched nerve. I had been taking NSAIDs such as advil and aleve and neither helped with the pain. I was given a small prescription for a painkiller but only needed to take it for 2 nights as the pain subsided. When I went home and told my regular doctor what happened, she said I couldn't get a definitive diagnosis unless I was xrayed while in pain. So for the longest time I went without any neck pain until several months ago. This time I got xrayed and was told it was cervical osteoarthritis. I was sent for physical therapy for 4 sessions. It amounted to getting my neck stretched for 20 minutes at a time. Since then, I've been taking Osteo Bi-Flex triple strength twice a day. I have 3 questions-- (1) What causes flare-ups of neck pain and can it be prevented? (2) Anyway to tell when it's about to flare up? (3) Osteo Bi-Flex is touted as building up cartilage--does it work only on knees or is it good for osteoarthritis anywhere?

This is a reply to # 514,441I suggest you visit a NUCCA chiropractor. They specialize in upper cervical which affects all discs. Visit the NUCCA website http://www.nucca.com. Don't just accept cervical arthritis. I believe you can help it greatly and reverse it to a large degree if you focus on this. My suggestion is NUCCA chiropractic,
liquid hyaluronic acid (synthovial7) and a real-ease neck and shoulder relaxer.
I have no comercial interest in these products - they have helped me. I have degeneration throughout my spine and I am reversing it. NUCCA is different, they
do an exact gentle adjustment in the neck and this allows all other discs to even out.
Once the discs are in the proper position, they will heal! Your weight distribution will even out on both sides of the body. This will prevent future problems like hip pain from occurring if not already present. You can do it. I am doing it!
Also get a good cervical pillow. Also, anyone please, do not cut out good fats from your diet such as avocados, olive oil and fish oil. Drink plenty of water. This is very, very important particularly for back problems. Don't let yourself dry up!

This is a reply to # 514,544Thank you for responding, Shelby. When I finish off the bottle of Osteo Bi-Flex I now have, I will get the formulation with hyaluronic acid in it. I tried to look at the link you posted for a NUCCA chiropractor but got a message saying basically that there was no such webpage. :-( While I am willing to try a chiropractor and my health plan says it will pay for it, I still have to hope that my primary care physician approves it. Thanks, again!

This is a reply to # 514,441I have read several responses to this email and having had spinal surgery to remove arthritic spurs from C6-C7, as well as T10-11, I would highly recommend that you do not listen to any of these people. Go directly to a neurosurgeon in your area who can do an MRI and/or x-rays of the affected area to tell you exactly what the state of your cervical pain is. My pain started with pain in my shoulder and after going to several specialists an orthopedic surgeon remommended that I see a neurosurgeon (e.g. they could find nothing wrong with my shoulder). The surgeon found that I had spurs that were impacting my spinal cord nerve endings. I was operated on a month later and the pain went away completely. Osteoarthritis of your spine generates spurs which can damage your spinal cord....this is nothing to fool around with. Pain in your back can actually be felt in many parts of the body as the nerve endings all pass through your spinal cord. In the case of my latest surgery (middle back T10-11) my spinal cord was actually flattened by the spurs which was causing numbness in my legs had they not operated when they did I could have been paralyzed. So, take it from someone who has chronic osteoarthritis in almost every joint in their body.............go to an expert for proper diagnosis.
