WASHINGTON, DC, Mar. 8 (UPI) -- Milk and dairy products do not promote healthy bones in kids and young adults, a Washington-based research group found after analyzing 58 studies.
The review was prompted by a "calcium paradox," the researchers said. Though Americans are some of the world's highest consumers of dairy products, U.S. rates of osteoporosis and bone fracture also are among the world's highest.
The non-profit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine reported there is little connection between calcium and bone health and "scant" evidence backing current U.S. recommendations on the intake of dairy products.
"A clear majority of the studies we examined for this review found no relationship between dairy or dietary calcium intake and measures of bone health. In the remaining reports, the evidence was sketchy," wrote Amy Joy Lanou, lead author.
Some studies showed a small impact on bone health but, in some cases, those conclusions were confounded by use of milk fortified with vitamin D, which also is important for strong bones.
The study appears in the March issue of the journal Pediatrics.

This is a reply to # 587,290Milk may very well be the tool they [the pharmaceutical industry] are using to create many illnesses. Chronic illnesses especially, like diabetis, arthritis, osteoporosis, and various heart conditions, that are difficult to link back to one source.
These illnesses are treated with pharmacy products and therefore represent a huge profit to pharmacy corporations.
Even if there is absolutely NO 'milk conspiracy' or 'creation of illnesses' ON PURPOSE, certainly the amount of horemones given to cows to produce [three times] as much milk are something humans should not be ingesting, but we are thru milk.
Also, there is anti-biotics given every week in any dairy operation. Close quarters and poor health make the anti-bioitic use necessary or the cows would all die. These can be found in EVERY milk drinking human too.
The udders of milk cows are infected thru mastitis too. This happens with the horemones and other milk-production increase giving medications and substances. The pus of this mastitis gets in the milk, as shown on TV last night {see, I don't get all my info from just one source!].
Note- I have seen many AMericans write here saying that the cows are not getting this horemone - they have elected to believe this rumour, BUT ITS NOT TRUE. Not even the FDA or USDA is saying that it was banned, it isn't banned and it is in use and this is factual. All milk drinkers have this horemone in their bodies, and the only debate is how much it is affecting those people.

This is a reply to # 587,290What do they propose is the nutrient that makes bones healthy? Vitamin D, sure, but is that it? They never say what we're supposed to do about it. Just 'This is bad for you.' In another two or three years they'll be telling us how milk is so good for us again.

It is good for baby cows not for humans. it is all a political based scam. if people stop eating dairy the big business dairy producers (as well as the pharmaceutical companies) will suffer big time and the government will always protect the business owners over the consumers. thats why they continue to promote the "myth" at the expense of the common people. - Re: So what do we do? This is a reply to # 587,293I don't know. When the issue of Pediatrics comes out, we ("we" meaning "subscribers" -- I'm not one) can find out what the complete story is on this meta-study. Even so, it's probably not likely to have any good answers, and the study was primarily to determine whether or not milk really does bones good. According to the authors, the answer is "no".

This is a reply to # 587,297For one thing, we know exercise builds strong bones! And the sun provides vitamin D, and we need a wide variety of minerals, including calcium, also silicon, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, etc. and stay away from fluoride!
