When I went to buy my organic cayenne pepper at Whole Foods, they were completely out! They had about 3 or 4 different brands, and every one of them was out of stock (I wonder how many other people in Fort Lauderdale are doing the MC!!). So I picked up a small jar of McCormick from the grocery store. I know certain people order the extra hot stuff online. What you purchased is only about 20HU. It will work, but you could do better. I used the McCormick stuff for a day or two. Then I got some organic cayenne from the Health Food Store. It was only 30-50HU (I think), and it was organic. The main thing I noticed was that it tasted SOOOO much better - and it didn't seem a bit hotter. It was so much easier to drink than the cheepo McCormick stuff. I was surprised to find that it wasn't really that much more expensive either.
I'm getting geared up to start another MC right now. This time I am going to order some organic 90HU. If anyone has a source for that that they would recommend - feel free to post it for me. I do appreciate it.

This is a reply to # 887,930You can get 90K HU in the bulk section at Back to Eden on Chesire Bridge and LaVista and I bet you can also get it at Sevenanda in L5PT.
If you do happen to be in the area at Back to Eden next week go up Lavista to Briarcliff to the Whole Foods and right in the entrance where the Flower Dept is on the central brick wall you'll see a couple on 24x36 images from my Botanical Abstract series. There will also be 2 - 22x28s on the wall to the right of the central brick wall.

This is a reply to # 888,005Questioned was not answered though. I too am using McCormick....perhaps my question is a little different. I understand the taste might be different but dos it make a difference as far as cleansing goes? The more HU the better for cleansing? Does it really matter?

the difference is substantial. I think
somewhere Seunim discovered this and
posted about it. It cost me about $2
for enough Frontier organic 90,000HU
cayenne to do a 30 day cleanse.
My understanding from my own research
is that cayenne like McCormicks is not
first grade and much of it is irradiated.
Do you live in the states?? Do you have
access to any organic cayenne??

I was directing myself at Ro since she lives in my neck of the woods.
It is not so much about brands as it is about being organic and the HU (Heat Units) generally the regular consumer level is junk in the 20 to maybe 40K HU. While Stanley does not mention HUs in the book but if you read any of the proponents of the healing properties of cayenne like Dr. Schulz or Dr. Christopher the byword is "the hotter the better". They write that the minumim HU to have theraputic effect on the system should be 90K.
The book only mentions adding 1/10th tsp per drink but most of us experienced MCers will do 1/4tsp of the 90K HU stuff per drink. It's OK if you can't do that much at first. You system adapts real quick and you can work you way up to it.
Cayenne works at stimulating circulation which will keep things moving in your system and promote healing by bringing a higher volume of fresh blood and axygen to the cells. Cayenne also is a great aid in loosening mucous in the digestive tract so I would say that the HU and amount of cayenne ingested while on the MC will play a key role in the efficacy of the system expelling mucous and toxins and healing.

I'm sorry. I thought I did answer. I said "it will work, but you could do better" - You're right - it wasn't enough of an answer after all. It certainly didn't express my enthusiasm for cayenne...
When I switched to the organic stuff (30-50HU), it not only tasted better - it also gave me a ton of energy and my eliminations increased. My energy level was through the roof and I felt fantastic. I actually became a cayenne freak. I love the stuff. That's why I'm going to be getting some 90HU organic cayenne for the MC I'm preparing to start.
Cayenne is really important to the cleanse, you really should not skimp on it. If you are able to get better quality stuff, it just makes sense to do it. Why go ten days or more cleansing your system with less than the best?
Maybe Zoe will post her extremely informative cayenne page?

It's real unlikely that I'm gonna be going into Atlanta anytime soon. The lake level is up alot from what it was at this time last year and most of my spare time is gonna be spent playin' on or in it.
I will check out your art when I get down that way again. I just don't get down that way very often. I live in Cumming and work in Duluth. Usually Duluth is about as far South as I get. I do appreciate the info though.

This is a reply to # 887,919I've been as high as a heaping teaspoon of 90.000 cayenne per drink. I had to back off however as it was causing pretty severe cramping. For me, I have found that about 1/2 teaspoon per drink really loosens up the old gunk and does a fine job of cleaning me out. As an added benefit, I think I may be ready to enter a Texas chili eating contest. ;>)

In the instance that Whole Foods is still out of stock on the organic cayenne, I started looking around on Vitamin Shoppe's website, since I can think of any other health food stores close by. They have the capsules, which I know are not good to use, but what about opening them up and just using the powder? They have some cayenne caps that have a pretty high HU. I see that they also have it in liquid form, and was wondering if anyone used that. I would imagine the measuring would be hard to nail down though, and I'm not sure what kind of processing would have to take place. Just trying to find a better alternative to my McCormick's, as it's too late to order something off the web.

I have heard of people using the cayenne caps by opening them and putting the powder directly into the lemonade. I think I also heard that the capsules are just about 1/10 teaspoon. As far as using the tincture/extact in your lemonade goes, that's not gonna work. I have the ground stuff and the extract. I use the ground cayenne in the lemonade. I use about 1/4 teaspoon (maybe more) per drink.
I use the cayenne extract in plain water. I put anywhere between 5-15 drops in a glass of water and chug it down. It gives me tons of energy. It also makes me want to drink more water, so I find it's not hard to get half my weight in ounces of water in each day.

I am using Now Foods 500mg capsules, they are very very good (SHU 40,000).
Organic Cayenne powder also very good.
Cheapo cayenne pills or supermarket spices are rubbish.
Why ?
I don't know, I think you just buy 4 brands and try until you find one that works.
I can take about 8 x 500mg of Now Foods and barely get any irritation, which means rapid progress inside.
It's been a lifesaver.
I used to take 100mg of the cheapo stuff and have a lot of pain.
I haven't tried any of the very high SHU cayennes.
