Yoga Positions To Improve Posture

There are a lot of different reasons that people take up yoga. Some people like the mental aspects of, while others enjoy it as a great low-impact way to exercise. There are even some people that claim yoga will make you taller. Although this isn’t exactly true, yoga can be a great way to improve your posture and make you appear taller. There are some positions that are known for their ability to improve posture.

Mountain Pose With Standing Forward Bend Variation
The mountain pose may look like you are just standing there. However, it is crucial that you are standing tall and focusing on your breathing. You will want to stand with your feet hip-width apart and keep them in a neutral position throughout the whole position, with a slight bend in your knees. You will want to have your tailbone tucked under just a bit with your feet grounded into the mat. While you are standing, slide your shoulder blades down and try to reach the top of your head to the sky.

While you are still standing, go into the standing forward bend variation. If you're looking at how to stop slouching, this is one of the best poses. Your hands will be interlaced behind your back, which is a great way to open up the shoulders where slouching is most common. If you are looking to open your chest up as wide as possible, latch your hands together behind your back and scrunch your shoulders to your ears. After you have done that for a few seconds, let your shoulder blades slide down your back as you straighten out your arms.

Standing Forward Fold And Downward Facing Dog
Standing forward fold is a great way to lengthen your back and start to improve your posture. Stand with your feet at hip-width apart, then tilt at the hips to fold your body forward. You can plant your hands on the floor or grab for opposite elbows, depending on your skill level.

Another ground-facing position that you can implement would be the downward-facing dog. This pose doesn’t look too difficult but you will definitely be able to notice a stretch. You will press your hands onto the ground while allowing your neck to relax so your spine can loosen and straighten out. Then, reach your heels to the ground to open up the back of your legs and lower spine.

Cat-Cow Pose
The cat-cow pose is one of the best body stretches that you can do when it comes to yoga. It is going to help you realize what neutral is, which is important to your posture so you know how to hold your body throughout the day. You will want to start on your hands and knees. Then inhale, and round your back. As you exhale, arch your back. Make sure you are focusing on bringing your back into the neutral position.

Cobra And Bow Pose
These two positions are done while you are laying on the ground. For the cobra pose, you will want to start by lying on your stomach. Place your hands underneath your shoulders, then press down and lift your upper body up. Hold this pose for five breaths, relax, and repeat.

To strengthen your back, you will want to do the bow pose. Where you start on your stomach and reach your hands behind you to grab your ankles. As you inhale, raise your thighs and upper body off the floor.

Since the majority of people spend a large part of their day staring at computer screens or looking down at their phones, they have really started to develop horrible posture. You could wear a back brace or go to a chiropractor. However, the back brace can be uncomfortable and numerous trips to the chiropractor can get expensive. The cheapest and one of the most effective things that you can do for your posture would be to start practicing yoga. You don’t even have to go to an hour-long class, you can simply do these poses every morning when you get up or every night before you go to bed.
