A Letter;Conspiracy

Dear A-Letter Reader:
I'm a firm believer in conspiracies...in the sense that Adam Smith
described them. "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even
for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy
against the public..."
What are the goals of the United States relative to the mid-East? Is it
part of a conspiracy to remove Israel's enemies? Is it a conspiracy to
control mid-East oil supplies? Or, are Bush and the "Neo-Cons" part of a
longer-term conspiracy to achieve US hegemony in the world?
Unfortunately, "conspiracy" is a word loaded with evil connotations. I
think it's more useful to talk of "agendas." Every individual, and that
includes each of us, is always focused on his or her self-interest,
i.e., on our agendas. When your self interest and mine coincide, we
"conspire" together to achieve our specific agenda. When I get together
with someone else, I may cooperate to achieve another of my agendas.
In my view there is not one Neo-Con conspiracy or one "US objective" or
one Islamic goal. The world is a mass of individuals, each pursuing his
or her individual self interest, making and breaking alliances in a
swirl of ever-changing agendas.
No doubt individual US politicians have many agendas. They seek status,
money, and power, which they hope to achieve by securing a hodge-podge
of alliances with each other, and with a broad array of special
interests, from big oil, to big banks, to big contractors, to a long
list of others (agriculture, the media, etc.). They conspire with
bankers on one agenda, oil companies on another, etc. Each of their
political supporters, as well, has his or her own agenda. The same is
true of every politician and businessperson in every nation in every
part of the globe.
Even if we could sit in on the super-secret meetings of the Council on
Foreign Relations, or the National Security Council, or Federal Reserve,
or the G-7 finance ministers, or OPEC, it wouldn't enable us to predict
the course of human events. It would only give us a glimpse of a tiny
fraction of the fluctuating agendas of those individual groups.
Conspiracies? I recall a quip by Harry Browne in a speech back in the
1970s. It was something to the effect that: "Anyone who believes that
conspiracies are effective has never been to a Rotary Club meeting."
World conflicts or potential conflicts cannot simply be attributed to
oil or Israel or Iran. Conflicts are infinitely more complex, and
therefore in predicting the future actions of one party or another we
are at best left with a range of possibilities. It's the Heisenberg
uncertainty principle applied to politics.
What does all this mean to you and me as individuals?
The question for each of us is the extent to which international
machinations are relevant to the achievement of our own individual
liberty-our freedom to live, work, and enjoy the fruits of our labors.
Our mission here at The Sovereign Society to help our members achieve
this by providing proven legal strategies for individuals to protect
and enhance their wealth and privacy, lower their taxes and to help
maximize their personal freedom.
We believe individuals should stand above the endless political
imbroglios that cause the rise and fall of nations. Our agenda is
individual liberty, not political power. Thus, rather than immerse
ourselves in unraveling the conspiracies of one group of political
thugs or another, we say, a pox on them all. Our agenda is to become
Sovereign Individuals.
