Problem Solving

If asked, 'what do you want in life, more than anything else?' Most would probably answer, with little variation; 'To be happy!'
We all want the same thing. But, who is truly 'happy'? We experience moments of happiness, from time to time, but we would be hard pressed if we had to come up with the name of any individual that we could say for certain is 'happy', 'content', or never has to deal with any form of unhappiness in their lives.

In fact, we are not 'happy' in general, it seems. We always have some kind of problem or dilemma that keeps us distanced from that elusive 'land of plenty' we so often dream and fantasise about in quieter moments. Why is that? We seem to be (temporarily) satisfied with brief moments of relief from our suffering. And then, like obedient soldiers, we hike up our over-alls and struggle back into the 'battle' once again, determined and duty-bound and proud of our scars and pain.

Like the old joke of the man that bangs his head against the wall; his friend asks of him, 'why are you banging your head against the wall?' He answers, 'because, it feels so good when I stop!'
The problem is; we have been banging our heads against the wall for so long, we have forgotten how to stop.
(We can stop, and some of us are remembering how.)

Yes, we have abandoned the notion of True Happiness for the smaller prize of temporary relief. We all want happiness, surely, but are willing to settle for 'feeling good.'

We continuously create problems -and scenarios that will lead to problems- for this very reason; when we have solved a problem, we feel good. It is a poor substitute for true, lasting happiness, but, for whatever reason, we believe it's all we deserve.
We are wrong.

We can approach and be in a more stable and grounded state of happiness if we are willing and determined to do the work. It is not 'easy' work. Not in the beginning. The good news is, it gets easier with practice, and it hurts less than banging our heads against the wall.

'Listening to the Heart.' What does this mean? We hear and read it again and again. Most people seem to think it is just some sentimental, romantic notion from a more idealistic and poetic era from long ago remembered through the mists of mythical lands but beyond the reach of modern 'practical- minded' humanity. This, it is not.

The 'Heart' is a reference to the Center of your Being. The heart pumps blood through your body to keep it alive. It is in the center of your chest and because of it's function, it is in the 'center' of your very life.
'Listening to the Heart' does not mean listening with the ears. Although, this is possible to do and can be of some use to quiet the chattering mind.
The Larger Meaning is simply to become aware of your physical being and how it is feeling, without judgement, expectation or any mental calisthenics.
We simply observe, and eventually, we become the Observer. Nothing more, nothing less. We begin to see that we have no problems, except what we have created with our imaginings, our minds.
We see that we are not our minds, after all, and we are not our problems, as we had come to believe.
Our old patterns of problem-creating will attempt to re-assert themselves. We are, after all, creatures of habit. That is why we must make 'listening to the heart' a habit, a ritual, so to speak, a daily routine. We develop a new habit of listening to the heart, rather than living in the mind, where problems are born, solved, die, and previously, were re-born.
One day we Awaken in 'the Land of Plenty' and banging our heads against the wall doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore. In fact, it seems insane to us.
To someone that is Truly Happy; it IS insane.
May we all find sanity.
May we all learn to Listen to The Heart.
love
