Blog: Morning and Evening Walk

Saturday January 14th

walking around an industrial neighborhood, and a studio complex

Morning walks included a walk around the complex where my studio is located, and another walk by the recycling center in the industrial section of town.

After a very pleasant rice milk chai drink, I set out on the walk to occupy myself while my son was busy at the recycling center. The sight of huge stacks of computers, and all their hardware lying in big crates in the warehouse amazes me. Some of them look newer than the computers where I work. In fact, most of them do. They're recycling the thick packing styrofoam now, which is great. Some big blocks of that. Dodging a few massive trucks heading out, I observe a storage yard full of out of commission freight trucks (the back portions only) with a few looking as if people might live inside currently. Dry brittle tall weeds everywhere. No precipitation still. Fire danger is getting more severe each day.

I amble through a gap in the fence over to my car mechanic's yard, which backs on the recycling center. I walk around the edges of this yard, shared with an auto body shop and a few other businesses. Many vehicles that have been in accidents. Lots of shattered glass. I walk carefully so that no glass will go into the openings in my Crocs (shoes).

Workers are busy at my auto mechanic's shop, but the other businesses appear to be closed for today. Every now and then car salesmen are paged at the Cadillac dealership down the street.

I pause to consider memories that come to me about this town's first major bagel shop, it's rise, and reign, and apparent demise. It was just across one of the avenues that I walked along. The production bakery. During this town's wilder days the baking crew would party all night and manage to make great batches of bagels too.
I remember visiting the production bakery a few times during those wild days.

Ah, but, my intention with this blog is to be in the present moment. That is because I know myself well enough to realize that I slide into remembering past moments so easily.

Perhaps the original intent is too rigid?

We will see.

My second walk was at the studio complex where my business is located. I walked all around the 3 interconnected yet separate buildings that comprise this complex to try to help a perplexed visitor find an artist's studio. Since many of the hallways in the middle building are rather hidden and obscure, with the doors unmarked, it wasn't easy. Got to meet one of the jewelry makers, and got to see some of the various artists' works in progress, which was pleasant.

It was also nice to talk to some of the other people with studios who I haven't seen for months. It's so great to get out and interact, not to mention the exercise factor!

Total distance walked: 1.75 miles.

Progress!
