Many people are interested in the Master Cleanse to lose weight and that's fine. It will happen. In an informal survey of 141 people who completed at least one Master Cleanse, the average woman lost about 12 pounds and the average man lost about 16. Both put back about 6 pounds after the cleanse.
The reason for the rapid weight loss is even more important than the weight loss itself. Toxins in the body are stored in fat cells. Any diet that restricts intake of calories below the amount used each day will result in some weight loss. However, if the toxins are not eliminated from the fat cells, as soon as the you go off the restricted calorie diet you'll put the weight right back on. On the other hand, if you eliminate toxins by detoxifying, you'll lose weight and continue to keep it off as long as you don't put back the toxins.
What do I mean by toxins? By toxins, I include environmental toxins like mercury, pesticides, etc.; toxins that result from the incomplete digestion of too much meat and dairy; toxins that are carried by bacteria and are released when the bacteria die; and some artificial preservatives, colors, sweeteners, and flavors.
What do toxins do? Some, such as mercury or arsenic, are highly poisonous; some merely cause mental confusion and tiredness.
The mobilization of toxins before they are eliminated is what causes the unpleasant, detox reactions that most alternative medicine says must come before healing.
So, for those people who want to lose weight and are not too toxic, do the Master Cleanse! For those who want to keep it off, don't overindulge in artificially preserved, colored, flavored, and/or sweetened foods. For those who want to continue to lose weight, eat a raw vegan diet.
