Israel’s new, cutting-edge desalinization plant near Ashkelon supplies much of the country’s fresh water needs, curtails the depletion of natural fresh water sources and lessens environmental degradation.
Desalinization is not the only way Israel is protecting its fresh water habitats.
Israel now uses purified water from treated sewage for irrigation enabling the country's farmers to decrease their use of fresh water by 50%. Soon, Israeli farmers will be using more treated water from sewage facilities than from natural fresh water sources.
