I'm hoping for some feedback please. I am a 46 year old female who has struggled with constipation as long as I can remember. It's been an on again, off again problem - but right now it is as bad as it's ever been.
Here's what I have tried so far:
- Stool softeners daily (Colace)
- Probiotics (i.e. Acidophilus caplets, Phillips Colon Health, etc.) daily
- Miralax - my GI doctor has me on 6-7 doses per day
- Amitiza - GI doctor prescribed last week, but makes me very sick to my stomach even when taken with food
- Senna supplements
I have tried virtually ever "natural" remedy I can think of and/or have read about. I eat prunes every day, lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains (oatmeal with flax, etc.) and I drink about a gallon of water every day.
Since January, I have lost 57 pounds (intentionally!) and before that, I used to eat junk food and fast food as my "regular" diet. Literally, eating fast food twice per day. When I was eating that way, I would have no trouble moving my bowels 1-2 times per day. Now that I am eating healthier and have lost all this weight, I cannot have a bowel movement without assistance and I rarely move more than once per week. I recently went almost 3 weeks with no BM.
I am ready to try darn near anything. I spoke to someone who does acupuncture who thinks maybe that might (??) help but I am somewhat doubtful. I just cannot STAND this awful bloated feeling all the time.
Does anyone have ANY ideas or can relate to what I'm going thru - please?? Thank you.Advertisement

I would like to know more about your diet. From eating a lot of junk food you have gone to eating healthy. In the process did you cut down on fats and oils and how much? You need good oils in your diet and this maybe partly the cause of your constipation. You apparently drink enough water daily so that is not the problem. Are you eating sufficient fiber?
I would also quit taking any laxatives. If you don’t have a bowel movement in 24 hrs then take a cleansing enema, then wait 48 hrs for your next bm. If that does not happen then take again a cleansing enema. Repeat this as often as necessary.

This is a reply to # 1,868,815Sure . . I log everything I eat and have for the last 6 months or so - I have extensive food journals. I have cut back on fatty foods (i.e. fast food) but I do try to incorporate oils into my diet regularly - canola oil, olive oil, etc. According to my food diary settings, I am eating approx 1450 calories per day, carbs are set at 200, fat is set at 48 grams, protein is set at 54 grams, fiber is set at 18 grams (although I regularly exceed that) and sodium is set at 2500. Those numbers "bump up" if I do vigorous exercise during the course of the day - and most days of the week, I do exercise and burn approx 300-400 calories per day which influences all of those numbers in an upward direction. Myfitnesspal.com is where I log all of this info and I have showed it to both my family doc & the GI specialist and frankly, they are baffled. Everything I am doing should be producing just the opposite result of the constipation I am currently going thru.
I usually eat approximately 30 grams of fiber per day. I drink approx 1 gallon of water per day, give or take a few ounces depending on the day.
My doctor prescribed the Miralax 6 times per day - which I have been doing faithfully. The last time I visited the GI specialist, he said he was "very hesitant" to have me take any less because I could get in serious trouble (i.e. obstruction). They did an x-ray of my belly yesterday - it showed no obstruction but quite severe constipation.
I also take Colace and a probiotic.
I have also tried Fleets and glycerin suppositories with little or no success.

This is a reply to # 1,868,454I was trying black seed and seems a side effect with me is soft poops and that is just with a tiny pinch and going more often. Think it increases bile, as there is some burning too. I am not liking it, but it might work well for you.- Re: Try black seed vikesfanmb

This is a reply to # 1,874,067Thanks for the suggestion. I have been trying a multitude of different things but feel I may finally have stumbled onto something that is helping. I have started taking a flaxseed oil supplement twice a day, a magnesium supplement once per day, vitamin C, docusate calcium (in place of the docusate sodium I was using) and acidophilus capsules. I do this every morning routine with a hot cup of coffee and repeat in the evening. It seems to be helping A LOT (going every day or at least every other!) and I am hoping this is a trend that continues!!

Re your chronic constipation, have you ever been tested for S.I.B.O. (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). I have copied over an extract from a webpage on SIBO, and apparently it can cause chronic constipation, see below……………..
“The symptoms of SIBO include:…
excess gas,
abdominal bloating and distension,
diarrhea, and
abdominal pain.
A small number of patients with SIBO have chronic constipation rather than diarrhoea. When the overgrowth is severe and prolonged, the bacteria may interfere with the digestion and/or absorption of food and deficiencies of vitamins and minerals may develop. Weight loss also may occur. Patients with SIBO sometimes also report symptoms that are unrelated to the gastrointestinal tract, symptoms such as body aches or fatigue. The symptoms of SIBO tend to be chronic. Might be worth asking your doctor for a hydrogen breath test - and also for a stool test for bacteria and/or parasites.

I'm sorry I can't be of help, but may I ask, do you have fecal Body Odor ? If so, are you very skinny or have a normal complexion?
Good luck with your problem, I too am chronically constipated but its not that severe. Have you tried a colonoscopy to be sure you don't have any colonic obstructions? - Re: Chronic, severe constipation . .... Provance7

This is a reply to # 1,868,454I know that you said that you have tried probiotics, but have you tried homemade cultured vegetables or other fermented foods? It may be that your digestive system was somewhat disrupted by the change of diet (even though it was a good change). I found that by adding fermented foods to my diet, it made a huge difference.
Try making your own yogurt or cultured vegetables. If you make them yourself with a "starter" there will be many more probiotics in them that the grocery store products. That means the probiotic action will be much more effective.

This is a reply to # 1,868,454You had mentioned trying probiotics, but have you tried eating fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, fermented vegetables etc.)? The fermented foods are usually more potent than the probiotics (if they are good ones!) Anyway, they may be helpful

The things that work for me the best to get my bowels moving is a big glass of prune juice in the morning before eating or late at night, also a goopd warm soapy enema and try to retain it for a few minutes to soften up the contents of the colon, senna pills work for me also but the prune juice works fast and best... - Re: Chronic, severe constipation . .... This is a reply to # 1,868,454I also am having problems with constipation. I'm a 14 year old female who's really fed up with it. I tried eating more healthy by drinking lots of vitamin c and water and also eating fiber. I even tried exercising,but the problem always came back worse. Does anybody know what I should do? This happens to me everyday. I barely feel comfortable....
