Okay so I posted on here after the worse Christmas ever thanks to my E.C. Burning lip pain and peeling lips ruined it.
It got to the point I would sit in the house all weekend just worrying about ever feeling normal again.
WHAT I DID
----------
I figured something I was doing was causing my E.C, so I basically stopped EVERYTHING:
1. Stopped using mouth wash
2. Stopped drinking alcohol
3. Stopped using shaving foam
4. Stopped using shampoo / conditioner / shower gel
5. Changed toothpastes
6. Rinsed lips and mouth with plain water after any unavoidable chemicals/irritants going near them.
7. Used only Vaseline with aloe vera initially if they felt too dry.
8. Started going to the gym and using the steam room.
Amazingly, the intermittent burning sensation hasn't happened since, and the skin on my lips has never become thick, dried and peeled in the way it did before.
I'm 100% convinced the underlying cause is one or more of things things.
Between Christmas and now, my lips are getting better and better every day. I can't believe it, it's not a problem for me any more.
MY LIPS NOW

1. The skin is slightly thicker than a normal lip, but it doesn't feel rough anymore and appears to be getting thinner all the time. It occasionally peels a barely noticeable amount. It is in no way annoying, uncomfortable, and it looks normal.
2. Recently my top lip has peeled slightly and hurt a little. I was recently in -11'c temperatures and think this was a one-off.
3. The small cluster of foredoyce spots that were starting to pop up in the center of my top lip will probably stay there forever, but no new ones are appearing (thank god).
4. Sometimes my lip becomes over-moist. I think my lips are so used to having to produce extra moisture, now that they are nearly healed it's producing too much and my lips. No more mega dryness.
WHAT I DO NOW

1. I no longer apply Vaseline, it's not necessary any more. I have done occasionally when going out in the cold.
2. I'm slowly re-introducing drinking alcohol, shower gel, shampoo etc in small amounts. So far this doesn't look to be reversing the healing.
3. I've stopped going to the gym and this doesn't appear to be reversing the healing.
MY CONCLUSION

Personally I think the main cause is mouth wash, if you're using mouth wash and have E.C - stop immediately, seriously, please. Also, I find that all the times my lips haven't been an issue in the past, was when I was using Sensodyne Fresh Mint / Total Care Gel toothpaste with no Sodium Lauryl Sulphate.
If you have E.C I strongly suggest you do what I did. Which is stop EVERYTHING for at least a month, then slowly re-introduce things.
I think my doctor was right. This is contact dermatitis from chemicals / irritants. She said it would take 5 or 6 months of stopping these things before I'm healed. It's only been 2 months and even if my lips don't get any better than they are now, I don't care - they're a million times better now :)
Smile you can be happy again, I am :) Please take this advice what have you got to lose.

I understand and agree completely with your reflexion BUT I think there is a NUANCE.

I would like to ask you a question : Did your E.C. really start when you started to use mouthwash ?
I ask you that because my lips problem began well-before than I started to use mouthwash.
I trully think that my case started with the combination of 'Damaged lips' -By the chronic pulling out during and after a chapped lips period- and chimical products : commercial lipbalms ; creams , ointments -which we can all put together because, in spite of not being the same, these products interact in the SAME WAY on the lips by preventing them from healing naturally : it always softens and strikes down the CRUSTS which are undeniable for HEALING-.
To get back to what you say, I think as you that we don't have to get the lips in touch with ANY PRODUCTS -which includes MOUTHWASH, of course-.
The lips have to heal by their own without ANY intervention at all, watsoever mouthwash, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc.
This doesn't want to mean that we don't have to brush our teeth or other, but avoid at the very most the contact with CRUSTS.
Since two weeks and half, I've really started a FREE treatment and I make sure that crusts adapt to my skin resiliency by keeping all the time the possibility to smile, laugh, talk, eat, in short by having ANY problem to open my mouth to the maximum.
Today, I've no burning sensation, no irritation, no resiliency problem, I just have crusts which do their part of the HEALING JOB.
Over time, it's certain that I gain in modesty but I'm sure that is the ONE and ONLY way to heal -I always repeat that, once again-.
I'm pretty impatient.

This is a reply to # 1,912,744I'm not really sure when my E.C. started.
It definitively wasn't a major problem for me until about 2007, which is the first time I remember them being annoyingly uncomfortable and peeling.
I used to pick and bite my lips when younger too.
Regardless, perhaps biting combined with chemicals is how it can start. Then ultimately it can continue with just chemicals when you stop biting. Who knows?
One thing I should mention is that I bought some expensive AloeDent SLS and fluoride free toothpaste - however this tingled my lips more than the Sensodyne I use today. I figured tingling could potentially mean irritation and more E.C. So just be careful, I think something you might think is fine could easily not be.
I stand by trying to avoid everything to start with. Use the minimum amount of toothpaste you can and rinse during brushing.
Just go cave-man style for a while, use nothing unnatural, wash in plain water - and hopefully like me you'll see an improvement fast.

At first every time I went to the steam room, large amounts of white dead soggy lip skin was scraping off. The amount of soggy skin coming off slowly reduced to the point it's at today, barely noticeable when it does.
The corn-flake like crusts disappeared fast and it just became a lip with slightly thicker skin.
You can tell my lips are still going through some kind of cycle. But the skin involved is getting less and less, and the cycle length is getting longer.
I never used to be able to go more than 30 minutes without my lips entering my mind. Now I can go a full day.

It's not the fact of using chemical products but, in brief, using whatever products.
I do know that lipbalms/creams/ointments don't solve the problem at all, do not concretely bring some improvement at skin level.
Crusts which NORMALLY have to grow on lips to HEAL them are constantly DROWN by all these products and any of them can resolve the problem.
We have to be patient, let the crusts do their role, considering that our lips have been even more damaged by these chemicals, CLUMSILY prescribed by dermatologists, and that lips are a very special area because of their location and their specific resiliency which demands SEVERAL 'waves' -or cycles- of crusts to get, finally, NORMAL LIPS.

If your talking about the rough-to-touch dry cornflake like patches. These stopped appearing quite quickly after stopping using all products. Although my lips had got to the point where the whole thing was peeling, not just small patches anymore.
I say chemicals, but I mean any product - because everything has chemicals in nowadays. Including shower gel etc, apparently an allergic reaction (if that's what it is) can occur somewhere else to where it is applied.

I was going pretty much every night, about 5 times per week. I stayed in there until I couldn't handle the heat anymore, it definitely felt beneficial. I want to continue going but I've just moved house away from it.
It seemed to force the lips to peel neatly and effortlessly. After each time the amount of skin coming off was getting less and less. But obviously this is probably because of everything else I was doing/not doing as well.

This is a reply to # 1,912,724Good to hear someone else is also healing! I too figured out that it was an oral hygiene product that triggered all this mess (for me it was toothpaste). I think more people need to take this issue into account. I see a lot of posts where people are saying "well, I cut it out for three weeks and it didn't change", but people need to realize that if you used the product for an EXTENDED length of time (for me it was close to a year) your recovery will reflect that. I totally agree with your doctor in saying that it could take 5-6 months. I know it's often hard for people on here to trust doctors after all the failed treatments, but they do know what they're talking about for the most part. This is a reply to # 1,913,111I would say that it depends a lot of the attention and credibility which dermatologists accord to us.
As an example, one of those I consulted refused to hear that his cream which prescribed to me was totally useless and didn't solve the problem at all.
Finally, he prescribed me again the same cream and gave me name and adress of a psychiatrist because he was thinking that I had a psychological problem about it.
Though, this dermatologist was 'reputable'. In brief, I've learned that all that specialists are, foremost, just mens (or womens) with their own state of mind and attention about theirs patients.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 1,912,724I've recalled 2 instances where I've had skin reactions being around SLS products. (1) Last summer I was working with Varnish in the morning and 5 hours later my dad asked me what I had been doing out in the sun all day because my face was so red. I hadn't been in the sun at all. (2) A few months before I got EC I was working in a machinery with a machine called a tumbler. Basically it's just a machine with small rocks and a lot of soapy water that I had my hands and arms in throughout most days. I got a rash/reaction all up and down my hands/arms so bad the President of the company who pretty much never talked to me stopped by to check it out.
Anyway, after reading some posts here, I thought maybe there's a connection and have gone this route. For 5 weeks I've been on all natural toothpaste, soap, shaving cream, and laundry detergent while going to a natural bristle toothbrush. I will be switching to an all natural deodorant next week. I use pure vitamin e oil on the lips at night and a couple times throughout the day. I use blistex medicated lip ointment when I go out. I'm taking a multivitamin and fish oil daily and have done 6-7 Liver Flushes over the past 6-7 months. Unfortunately, I have experienced no noticeable progress. How long did it take before you started noticing any progress at all?

I recommend you stop using medicated Blistex immediately, my lips have been in their worst state while applying that. I found Vaseline with Aloe Vera did the job without risk of nasty reactions.
Also be careful of these "all natural" products, some may be misleading. Just don't use anything for a few months - plain water.

I agree about the worthlessness of any chapstick, which makes worse eve more the lips state.
I wonder too how long it will take until I could see some improvement. It's been about 2 weeks and half that I am in a 'FREE' treatment and I really want to see the healing of just a very little area to show me that I am on the way of HEALING !

This is a reply to # 1,913,276it only took me about a week to START seeing improvements. The thing is, if your condition is caused by contact dermatitis, you'll not only have the peeling, but I'm pretty sure you'll have a burning/itching as well as inflammation as those are signs of an allergy. If, like OP said, the burning stops then you are on the right path. After my lips stopped burning, the swelling went away. I can only speak from personal experience of course.

In my case I had not really the burning sensation but nevertheless a bit because I had a lack of skin due to, I suppose, the combination of damaged lips and saturation of chpastick/creams/ointments, THANKS to dermatologists, for a long period.

As I say, I was used to bit and pull my lips out, but during a period, I had no 'crusts' at all, that's why I trully think that all began with the using of products -also considering that I maybe passed over the pulling out limit-, a commercial chapstick first.
Then, a vicious circle became established, which spreads a lot when I decided to consult a first dermatologist in order to have a judgement and then, all got out of hand.
Our problem had not been tackled with reflection and smartness from dermatologists, at all, which damaged even more our lips and drove us crazy.
We just should have been patient and do not interact our lips with any products, but our mind had been really affected by these dermatologists, with who we fastly disenchanted.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 1,914,589With the cluster of fordoyce spots aside (barely noticable), there is no scaring or anything.
Remember I'm still not 100% recovered. At the moment my lips are quite often sticky, this is because the skin is still a bit thicker than normal, but also quite moist resulting in stickyness. Obviously this is much better to deal with than thick hard dry peeling skin.
I reckon in a few more months when the skin is fully back into a normal cycle, there won't be any evidence of the condition.
I'm often looking in the mirror and thinking wow they look totally normal! I also keep looking at other peoples lips and a lot of the time I think mine look to be in a better condition than other peoples!
So basically yes, unless you have loads of fordoyce spots (which can be lasered away) - I think healthy looking lips is on the cards.- Re: Thank you and goodbye, cured (en... goodcalluk

This is a reply to # 1,914,712I do recognize myself when my first dermatologist told me she had never seen that kind of lips case, and a pharmacist who told me she had never seen lips as bad as mine too !
This contributed to the haste and dove me into the spiral of chemicals, although I was already using commercial lipbalms, obviously without any improvement, in the contrary, which even marked the beginning of my condition, what I truly believe.
Talking about Fordyce's spots, I've found out some informations on internet and I've realized that I had these kind of spots on my lips, in a total of 3, a few weeks ago but they have totally disappeared now !
I was wondering about scars or prints of damaged lips because my lower lip is not very uniform between the normal lip and the damaged lip in rebuilding, but I've started my free treatment three weeks ago, so my lower-damaged lip area is still rough-to-touch, therefore not definitive at all.
I do see an improvement on my upper lip but I'll do the check when all my crusts would come out naturally, in approximately less than a week !Advertisement
