Well, it had been almost a year since I stopped chelating mercury using ALA, as I had basically given myself side effects that took time to recover from.
After a bad experience with DMSA (I got very sick after I went off round for a while), I've decided to change things up.
I am taking a small amount of NAC every morning, and activated charcoal at night. I take selenium (400mcg) to try to protect the brain against mercury when I chelate (that's supposed to help, right?). I consume fish oil every day, and I take sunflower lecithin (supposed to help the brain as well, and help improve memory, another thing I'm not great with) with dinner.
Anyway, I decided to do a round with 20mg of ALA every 3 hours last weekend (Saturday-Monday), using an iPod alarm to ensure I wake up at night to keep taking it, which has been effective.
I've been experiencing Depression though. I mean, I'd had problems for a while with being totally bored and not finding anything interesting or having motivation to do anything. I almost cried yesterday, and I actually did break down in tears during my first DMSA off-round.
What do you recommend to reduce this damn depression? I want this damn mercury out of me. I already had my "silver" fillings removed by a sympathetic dentist, which helped a lot with various health problems, but this new general malaise and occasional breakdown are very upsetting. What do you think is causing it, how do I avoid or reduce it?

I'm not so sure you are wise to continue to use such generous doses. Lots of people chelate with lower doses and get nice gains. Why beat yourself up?! Cutler says that when we double the dose we only increase excretion by less than 40%, not by the 100% one might expect.
I've been chelating for 3 yrs and have not used 20mg ALA. I can use 20mg DMSA along with 12mg ALA. Such low dosing is unusual but I've gotten nice gains over that time.
I had some unusual sadness Depression during the dump/stall phase--around 6 months in. It was also at a sensitive time of year so that probably added to it.
Cutler stresses that you should not expect gains if you are not taking generous doses of antioxidants. Mg, Zn are also on his short list. Mg is used in production one of the body's natural antidepressants. Certain B vitamins are also involved.

This is a reply to # 2,080,648I may lower the dose for the next time. I do take a magnesium supplement, and I take a B-complex every day as well.

This is a reply to # 2,080,751Cutler says it is critical to take antioxidants, for example several Grams of vitamin C in divided doses and some vitamin E. Selenium could be considered. Zinc is in his short list as well but that is tricky for some people with Mcs.

This is a reply to # 2,080,761I'd recommend Andy Cutler's Depression protocol which help me recover from extreme Depression cause by mercury poisoning or Amalgam illness. Goggle (Andy Cutler depression) Cutler's protocol I used was this For catecholamine Depression try l-tyrosine 500-3000 mg a day, and forskolin 10-30 mg 1-3 times a day. Every person has different body chemistry so this protocol may not apply to you. But there are 5 different protocols that are listed. After about 2 months on this protocol I have recovered to almost a normal range of motivation, mental drive and mental energy.
As suggested by others start at very low does of oral chelation and slowly increase the level. I'll explain why below, based on my experience
The most important discovery while battling Amalgam illness (started age 38 now 58) is that I have and believe most adults who have this illness is a mutated DNA or C677T. Discovered by a DNA blood test. This mutation prevents the body from converting folic acid into folate. Folate + B6 and B12 are involved in exporting heavy metals out of the body. Because of C677T my body can only export a lower level of Mercury safely, therefore I had to used very low level of DMSA and ALA, (this may apply to you) I started around 5 mg and slowly increased based on the yahoo chelation group recommendations, they have a xcel spreadsheet to chart your progress. This is a HUGH and very important method and or tool for recovery from mercury poisoning. Hope this helps

I'm glad to hear your Cat. Depression had diminished with the supplements.
Mine has also been helped by those and others but I am sensitive to forskolin. It has a similar effect as caffeine. I'm also sensitive to caffeine.
Cutler encourages people to take methylation support. An old post on the supplements he took while chelating was dominated by methylation support supplements and antioxidants. However he warns that some people will become agitated on B12 and some other methylation support supplements. I am one.
However, he is not impressed by the argument made about the need for methyl folate and other more esoteric forms of folate. He thinks the vast majority of people will do okay on higher amounts of inexpensive folic acid.
He clearly isn't discouraging the use of the more expensive stuff except for the price. For example this is a post in a detox support group so there is an assumption that heavy metals are involved in the person's problems.
