p53 is a transcription factor protein that is involved in regulating genes that coordinate the response to DNA damage.
It is known that p53 helps prevents skin tumors following UV damage. It also appears to make sun tanning possible. p53 knockout mice exposed to UV are unable to develop pigmentation on their tails and ears, wildtype mice similarly exposed were able to tan
