Whenever I can't sleep or can't get back to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night/too early I eat a banana and I just go right to sleep.

Bananas are very rich in tryptophan which I guess explains this.

I usually sleep well so I don't know if this would work for someone with severe sleeping problems. Worth a try though.
