The really giant advantage of magnesium oil (magnesium chloride) is that it is ideal for transdermal uses. Oral forms of magnesium are good, especially if they contain Krebs cycle salts. The oral magnesium formula I take (called MYO-MAG), for example, contains magnesium malate, diglycinate, and carbonate.
While I have benefited from oral magnesium, I am truly amazed by what I feel when I apply magnesium chloride "oil" on my skin. I am sleeping better, have more energy, reduced muscle tension, and far fewer aches and pains. My friends with heart problems have told me it works for their life threatening conditions. These results confirm what Dr. Mark Sircus says in Trandermal Magnesium Therapy (Phaelos 2007), which is my one favorite books.
Transdermal magnesium therapy offers much faster uptake and assimilation than oral forms. If you are very deficient in magnesium, using oral forms it can take six months to a year to build up your levels to normal. In contrast, you can use magnesium chloride in the form of magnesium oil (or flakes) to replenish your magnesium quickly, safely and effectively. Your skin surface can absorb large amounts of magnesium, and generally you cannot "overdose" because your skin stops absorbing it when cellular levels reach a normal range.

I typically use magnesium oil to create a homemade lotion of equally parts magnesium oil, coconut oil, and aloe vera gel. I also use it straight (unmixed) or diluted with water. When you use it straight it can slightly sting or irritate your skin. Mixing it into a lotion helps reduce sting. You also can use it in a bath or footbath. Using a lotion or spray is the most cost effective and gets in the most magnesium per application.
In the past I used magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) which is much cheaper, but you definitely get what you pay for. Magnesium sulfate is poorly absorbed and retained, at least when compared to magnesium chloride. Magnesium chloride is the form the body most easily recognizes, when applied transdermally.

I read Dr. Sircus's book and then tried magnesium oil for myself. I am so glad I did. Magnesium has been neglected by conventional medicine, largely because there is no money to be made from a natural mineral that cannot be patented.
