K citrate chelates mercury
posted this on the chelation forum, thought i would post it here too since we had that discussion about chelation. it really surprised me at how affective potassium citrate was at increasing mercury excretion in the urine. ascorbic acid has virtually no impact on urinary excretion of mercury.
k citrate alone is about 50% as effecitve as DMSA at increasing urinary excretion of mercury. when taken along with DMSA or DMPS mercury excretion is quite high. fascinating. also note NAC has some, but very small, impact on mercury excretion.

When these three agents were tested, along with potassium citrate (5 g), DMPS (orally given at a dose of 10 mg/kg – intravenously it is dosed at 3 mg/kg), DMSA (30 mg/kg), and NAC (30 mg/kg), their effects on mercury excretion were comparable.102 When given alone, DMSA caused an increase in urinary mercury excretion of 163 percent, DMPS 135 percent, NAC 13 percent, and potassium citrate 83 percent. When given with potassium citrate the urinary mercury excretion increased to 163 percent for both DMPS and NAC. It is generally recommended that these agents be given in several day courses repeatedly, with rest periods in between. Repeat urine testing every fifth round of these compounds is desirable, to monitor effectiveness of the therapy and to know if more rounds are needed.
