Actually, I didn't equate it to "bad" behavior. I thought it was instinctual...

a way for the "goodie" to absorb MORE minerals from the ground and render it more nutritious.

I am just glad he dug under the playset, near the sandbox - where I wouldn't care how the yard looked so much.
