Think I'll move yogurt making for personal use down a ways on my priority list for now.

D-Lactate is a problem for some with short bowel syndrome. It also is a problem for those people who have either temporary or chronic carbohydrate maldigestion/malabsorption. Increased D-Lactic Acid intestinal bacteria is also seen in some patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

When carbohydrate malabsorption is present, the otherwise favorable genus Lactobacillus, or other D-lactate producing probiotics, can overgrow and produce toxic amounts of D-lactate. Having too much D-Lactate producing flora can cause acidosis diarrhea and may be associated with various types of cognitive dysfunction and neurological impairment.

High D-Lactate is determined in special blood tests or a special urine test where organic acids are measured.

So there needs to be discernment as to which probiotic is helpful and which probiotics may drive a body into imbalance. The wrong probiotic could make people sicker.
