That's the beauty of the "Scientific Method"! Someone fudges the data and someone else will call them on it. Scientists are expert sharpshooters in this respect. Controversies such as this spur on more research and as the data volume increases, the premise of the original research either lives or dies if the new data replicates or refutes the original. The cycle of continued independent research is very valuable.
