Sadly, the EU has taken the path which is exactly the opposite of what one famous European once famously stated.

But respectfully, I think you are mistaking the EU with Corporate interests and human greed which permeates our Globe.
The USA is on the same wavelength and heading in the same direction, it is just that Europe is a test-bed for Corporate America.
