Prevention, for one. People now know how it's transmitted. People are also more aware of health now. The 80s were horrible for the body in every way possible. I remember my friends and I living off Koolaid and white bread and our food pyrmaid actually having a junk food section, to be eaten in moderation, of course... People drank, smoked like crazy (in cars and houses with their kids beside them)... No, the 80s may have been fun but we all paid for it in one way or another.
I also think where you live may also have something to do with it. I'm not far from areas that were harder hit, like San Fran. and I still hear of it every now and then. I imagine some third world countries still battle this one daily.
