The method you describe sounds like what dermatologists recommend. I mean keeping your lips moist. I think it is more due to protecting your lips from saliva, mouth breathing, fungus/bacteria in your mouth, or allergens.

I think if people are getting nowhere with dermatologists, they should try others specialists. I just do not know which specialist at this time.
