More than a few people got an xray after Amalgam removal. It is good at revealing remaining amalgam.

However it does not reveal remaining Amalgam under a crown. Lifting it is the only way to know : (

I've never heard of a situation where part of the dentist's tool remains but I can't imagine it would contain mercury.
