You don't say the strength that you bought. 5% would have quite a strong Iodine smell as well as taste. It comes down to eventually trusting the vendor after you take the product and believe that you're responding appropriately to it. If you bought some J Crow's Lugol's of the same strength to compare it with, you might learn the smell, taste, and effect of the real thing.

I prefer to trust vendors, but verify what I can when I use a new one.
