And were you there? Quite honestly, how do you know that the words you read by anyone aren't reads with many mythical constructs that fill the pages? If those reads are fiction or allegory to begin with, turning fantasy into 'truth' after the fact doesn't mean what is said in in those are really true. With the Word of God inspired by God claiming to be Truth(and absolutely unchanging in that attribute) and given thru men He deemed righteous and preserved by God, then a person can certainly have the right track to wisdom found only in Him. One is only enlightened when coming face to face with the Words of Light and embracing them as given...Truth.
