Well Intentioned Ignorance
People often have the best of intentions, but how little so many of them know...
Date: 3/27/2006 10:36:40 PM ( 18 y ) ... viewed 2035 times I am trying so hard to be healed by natural means, in other words, I want to care for my body so it will heal itself. Rest, good diet, gentle stretching, proper therapy and prayer; the formula for self healing sounds pretty easy, but its not. One of the worst obstacles I have faced is the well intentioned ignorance of the average American.
1. Diet-A very lovely and generous person offered to buy me some groceries and I accepted her offer. She wanted to buy basic staples like milk, sugar, and flour,. I thanked her and explained that I was on a very strict diet for inflammation. What I needed was fresh fruits and vegetables, and good quality juices. I told her that, for now at least, I could not have wheat products, sugar, dairy or meat. Additionally, I was too weak to prepare meals, so simple foods would be best. Well, when the groceries were delivered there was meat, shrimp (what a temptation to fight, I love shrimp), canned chicken and tuna, sugar free Jell-o with Aspartame and lots of foods with Splenda, even the juice had Splenda. This dear lady proudly told me she spent a long time reading labels, making sure I got only healthy food. Bless her heart, if she only knew.
2. Steroids-"When my knees hurt, I get this special shot that cures them right up."
Yes, lot's of people get Cortisone shots in their knees and it does seem to help-for a while. Doctors would love to put me on prednisone, its the standard treatment. But, so far I have resisted steroids to control the inflammation. I have two dear friends, one in her late 50's and the other in her early 60's who have been on prednisone for years due to auto-immune problems. I have prayed for both of them as they hovered near death due to complications from the steroid. One has intestines so thin they have ruptured and poured poison into her body cavity, the other has constant high blood pressure even though she is very thin and frail, her bones can break with a gentle hug. Yet the husband of one of these women thinks I'm foolish for refusing this treatment.
3. Surgery-To be honest,only about half the people who bring up this subject push for surgery; the other half are usually victims of failed spinal surgery. In this I am very confused. First of all if the doctor's diagnosis is correct, surgery would probably not help. Still, I ask myself, what if it could be quickly and easily corrected? Wouldn't it be better to do it and get it over with? Some people do have successful spinal surgery. Would I be one of the lucky ones? If this program does not work, I may have to consider surgery, but for now, it "feels" wrong.
4. "Why don't you get a real doctor?" I go to a Chiropractor. He cured my Reflux Disease (Gerd)with a few treatments when Dr. J said I would need to take Nexium for the rest of my life. He fixed the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome when Dr. H said I would eventually need surgery. He has helped me find the right supplements and proper diet (although I have not always followed it). I trust my doctor, he has a degree in Naturopathy as well as Chiropractic, he is a Diplomate in Pain Management, certified in acupuncture and a large number of alternative treatments. My doctor is a "real" doctor and far more qualified to treat my problem than most Md's. Yet some people think he's in league with the devil.
I am open to trying almost anything that might work, I have received Healing Energy treatments that really made me aware something was happening, I have also gotten Reiki. I have read Power Healing by Dr.Zhi Gang Sha and practice chanting, visualization and I talk to my hurting body. I also am studying Quantum Touch. I no longer say I hope I'll get better, or even I will be healed; I now tell myself "I am healing". I get discouraged a lot, and still have a lot of stuff to work out and a lot to learn, but please, you dear well-intentioned traditional minded friends, please, let me do what I believe is right, no matter how strange it may seem to you.
