Millions exposed to uncontrolled hemorrhaging, lesions, cancers

Recently, frustrated scientists presented evidence that millions of Gulf area residents were poisoned by the BP Gulf disaster. Worse, they believe that millions more could be exposed to long term poisoning.

Yet other than those worried scientists few seemed to care.

Now more frightening evidence has emerged: areas of the Gulf Coast may have been saturated with high levels of benzene, hydrogen sulfide and radioactive hydrocarbon effluents--three deadly substances that can cause disease and death years after the initial exposures.

"Benzene and Other Toxic Solvents and Chemicals" - Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Work-related exposure to benzene has been linked to the development of blood cancers and blood disorders. Examples of blood diseases that may be caused by occupational benzene exposure include acute myelogenous leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (which can progress into acute myelogenous leukemia over time), aplastic anemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. “Radioactive Hydrocarbon Effluent ...from oil and which possesses higher levels of radium isotopes. The deeper the petroleum reserves, the more likely the reservoirs of oil and methane in those geological formations will contain uranium, thorium or radium. Given the elevated levels of radioactivity at the source, the level of radioactivity associated with the hydrocarbon effluent coming out of the well will inevitably be impacted. Radium isotopes have inherent health risks that ought to be identified and properly disseminated. The concerned resident of the Gulf Coast may want to initiate him/herself in the area of health impacts due to long-term exposure to low grade radioactivity. Of course, the seafood, the waters and the beaches all provide different vehicles for such contamination to take place, each with varying consequences.'

  Benzene is the main toxin in the hydrocarbon fraction of exhaust. Benzene and other less known hydrocarbons are produced in petroleum refining, and are widely used as solvents and as materials in the production of various industrial products and pesticides. Benzene also is found in gasoline and in cigarette smoke. Other environmental sources of benzene include gasoline (filling) stations, underground storage tanks that leak, wastewater from industries that use benzene, chemical spills, and groundwater next to landfills containing benzene. Exposure to benzene can cause cancer, especially leukemias and lymphomas. Benzene has a suppressive effect on bone marrow and it impairs blood cell maturation and amplification.

    I suppose that you will find a way of belittling anyone who speaks up, and I wonder why?
    Are you trying to argue that the area hasn't been poisoned because there are other sources of benzene, and that the millions of galleons of stuff dumped into the enviornment will have no effect?
    Reference my prior posts on Nalco to check the quanities used, they just had to post their quarterly profits with the SEC, and if they lie, the will get put into jail for it.
    They sold a lot of corexit to both BP and the federal government. And they have used it freely.
    You have disputed posts, and then belittled the poster, then blamed the poster for forcing you into your positions.

    EPA measurements of benzene in urban areas ranges from 0.02 parts per billion to 112 parts per billion. That is parts per billion, not parts per million. 3500 parts per million is the highest level ever recorded in large open air areas. Now, with winds coming mostly out of southerly directions, do you really think that gulf coast auto exhaust and cigarettes led to such an astronomical measurement?
    
    So, let's see, what else might have happened to cause such high levels of benzene and other toxic compounds in the air in the gulf area? What else was there that hadn't been before? Why, I do believe it is all that oil and dispersant.
    
    Come on, buddy - you aren't just disputing wild theories here.
    
    BTW, benzene is carcinogenic at mere parts per billion. What do you suppose high parts per million might do?

        In general I would recommend a thorough cleansing regimen for the liver, gall bladder, colon, kidneys, blood, etc., heavy use of digestive enzymes three times a day on an empty stomach, niacin, chelators, etc. and measures to make sure that the liver is at optimum health and the bile ducts free and flowing. I would also recommend measures to boost the immune system and the adoption of a diet and lifestyle that were as healthy as possible.
        
        Actually, benzene detox looks like a good subject for investigation and a new article. I'll try to put something together soon. I am in the middle of a number of projects and responses to people, but I know that time is important.

        The power house is using lemon juice( citric acid )which is a well known benzene binder and along with niacin, phosphate and vitamin c (natural preferred). About 12 large lemons per one gallon of hungry water (distilled).
        
        Chlorella helps mop up benzene as well.
        
        For minerals, boron, zinc, manganese, and silver will help detox. Best would be colloidal and use sublingually and orally.
        
        I had a friend die long before I knew any of this. Her apartment was next to a leaking underground gasoline tank at a service station. She died of intestinal cancer. She went the mainstream way(chemo etc). They found out after people had problems that there was a leak. Other tenants had health problems ranging from irritable bowel to leukemia.
        
        People need to take exposure to benzene seriously and follow up.

BP Spill Workers Say Dispersant Made Them Sick

The 1.8 million gallons of dispersant that BP and federal responders spread on the massive Gulf oil spill in 2010 are already coming back to haunt them. FuelFix.com, a Houston Chronicle spinoff devoted to covering energy, reports today that the company that manufactures Corexit, the chemical sprayed on the surface of the Gulf and at the wellhead to disperse the oil in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, is trying to get out of a proposed settlement with plaintiffs who say they have health problems resulting from the spill and cleanup.

Corexit manufacturer Nalco wants the US district judge handling the case in New Orleans to exempt it from any liability in the settlement of a class action lawsuit brought against BP and other companies involved in the disaster on behalf of more than 10,000 plaintiffs. In March, the plaintiffs and BP reached a settlement agreement that is expected to cost $7.8 billion and would cover both economic loss and medical claims, and would also establish a program to monitor the health of affected individuals. The judge is now deciding whether to approve the agreement, but Nalco says that not only should it not be included the companies that are asked to pay up in this case, but it should be excluded from any future cases:

The spill responders contend that the federal Clean Water Act provides them immunity from liability for actions taken at the government’s direction.

"Nalco provided Corexit at the express request of the federal on-site coordinators," Nalco attorneys wrote in the dismissal motion filed in May. "Nalco supplied a product that was and had been listed on the federal government's list of approved dispersants for decades and that the government repeatedly approved for use during the response."

This is a compelling argument, because it is true: Corexit was listed as an approved dispersant, and it was what BP decided to use on the Gulf. The problem, though, is something we've covered here before: The federal government doesn't consider the human or environmental effects of the chemicals when approving them for the list. Companies like Nalco don't even have to disclose what kinds of chemicals are in their product in order to get them approved, thanks to the extremely outdated and industry-friendly chemical regulation laws in this country. Current chemical regulation laws actually makes it really difficult for the Environmental Protection Agency to do more than give these chemicals a rubber stamp.

Meanwhile, chemicals used in the dispersant can cause liver and kidney damage, as well as other health problems. Studies since the spill have found that the dispersants are sticking around longer than people expected and can be absorbed through the skin. In the weeks and months after the spill, many cleanup workers and nearby residents complained of ill health effects like nausea and rashes they believed were caused by the chemicals. So is Nalco liable for supplying the chemicals, or BP for buying them, or the federal government, which was supposed to be overseeing the clean up work?

If Nalco is granted an exclusion in the lawsuit, it would leave the plaintiffs who believe they are sick because of exposure to the chemicals in a tough spot: they can sign onto the settlement now, or try again to sue Nalco later. Neither option is great, according to the lawyers representing the plaintiffs:

"We are recommending the medical settlement program for most of our clients, even though it leaves Nalco off the hook," [Beaumont-based lawyer Brent] Coon said. "The reality is, most people exposed to these kinds of toxins don’t develop a disease for many years. For most plaintiffs that were exposed, it is premature to sue, and the medical monitoring program at least develops a mechanism to measure how they were impacted."

But Louisiana-based lawyer Daniel Becnel says he is encouraging the 3,500 cleanup workers he represents to fight their cases in court.

"I have hundreds of people that are horribly sick," Becnel said.

Additionally, research indicates that dispersants prevent the biodegradation of toxic oil components, as well as increasing dispersant absorption into fish from between 6 to 1100 fold higher levels.

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Charlie Crist authorized
property appraisers Wednesday to calculate lost
real-estate values caused by the Gulf oil spill, so
homeowners and businesses can send the tab to BP.

His action drew approval from some affected
property appraisers, although staff time and cost of
reappraisals will be tough on cash-strapped
counties.

Crist signed an executive order for the 26 Gulf
counties under his previously declared state of
emergency, authorizing appraisers "to provide an
interim assessment of any property that may have
dropped in value because of the oil spill. Property
owners can then use that documentation to file a
complaint against BP or any other responsible
party."

It's unclear how much the additional costs will be in
Escambia County, said Escambia Property Appraiser
Chris Jones.
