Questions about recent experience w/ alpha-lipoic acid
Hi - after being on generic Wellbutrin (for my severe depression) for several months, I started experiencing severe hair loss. Since I had heard that Wellbutrin can cause hair loss and have read some firsthand accounts of others experiencing hair loss on Wellbutrin, I basically attributed my hair-loss crisis to Wellbutrin. So just recently, my doctor and I agreed to taper off the drug. I'm still in the middle of the taper and we're doing a slow, gradual taper - so I possibly wont know until many weeks/months from now if getting off Wellbutrin will halt/reverse my hairloss.
But there have been times when I've wondered if my hair loss had a different or additional trigger. See - a few months ago (over the summer, I think), I took alpha-lipoic acid (the natural "r" form) for three or four weeks before certain symptoms caused me to stop taking it. From reading all of the glowing claims on various websites, I thought alpha-lipoic acid would be sort-of a "miracle worker" - but I found after a short time of taking it that certain "minor" negative conditions I've been dealing were getting worse. My system seemed to become more "unbalanced" on this supplement (either this, or certain things were a hell of a coincidence - I can never be certain). My troublesome complexion got worse (and still hasn't "recovered"), my problems with body acidity got worse, I seemed to (re)develop certain mineral deficiencies (there is a very weird, "compulsive" symptom that I get that seems to be connected with iron deficiency - this symptom was aggravated around this time). I even seemed to gain weight around this time (I think my weight problems are at least partially caused by estrogen dominance - so perhaps my estrogen dominance became worse. This could have also been caused by some wheatgrass I was trying around this time too - the wheatgrass contains a pretty healthy dose of beta carotene, which I've since learned can be estrogenic.). My severe "brain-fog" - which I was hoping would get better on ALA, certainly didn't improve. And, looking back - I believe the hair loss started around this time, too - although I'm not exactly sure (I wish I had written this stuff down at the time it was happening).
It was weird and disconcerting that the hair loss started pretty suddenly - and only after being on Wellbutrin for about 10 months. My doctor was skeptical that Wellbutrin was causing the hair loss, since it only started so long after starting Wellbutrin - but I convinced her that Wellbutrin was the likely cause (I have had previous experience in late-emerging side-effects). But there is some doubt in the back of my mind - what if the alpha-lipoic acid triggered this, by worsening some hormonal imbalance or worsening my possible mercury toxicity? Or maybe it is some combination of the Wellbutrin AND ALA-failure/mercury-toxicity.
I was swayed by all of those pro-ALA websites - then I learned that ALA can actually make (symptoms of) mercury toxicity worse. Funny how I didn't come across any strong statements mentioning the downside of ALA until AFTER I had bought the supplement and took it for 3 or 4 weeks. (Then again, I don't think I started strongly considering that I may have mercury toxicity until after the "failed" ALA experience - I often have "bad timing" like that, lol.)
Anyway, do you think the problems I experienced taking ALA is a sign that I have mercury-toxicity? Do you think my hair loss may be related to the ALA "redistributing the mercury" and worsening mercury-related health issues? Has anyone else experienced hair loss that was triggered by taking ALA, or experienced hair loss related to mercury toxicity?
Thanks for any help. :)
