Right, but you can see a "particle beam" if you shine a light through it. I am not sure if that is the correct terminology. And the description is not quite accurate. What you can see is the light hitting (bouncing off?) the particles as it "passes through" them. And you can see how dense the beam through one is in comparison to the other one.
