Hanna made a good suggestion regarding vacuums.

As per cleaning carpets, rent a steam cleaner (do it your self) and instead of using the chemical cleaner use a solution of borax and baking soda. It works very well. What colour are your carpets?

Then, when possible maybe think about taking out the carpet. They are a trap for toxins, dust, mites and mold. But, don't fret - they are useable with some precautions.
