Re: KEBOD! I FOUND something!!!!! :D
The chutney recipe is really different. I thought you were pulling my leg, not thinking there could really be a recipe for this. I have all the ingredients (not the dal, but will use chickpeas), including the aes...ftda... however it's spelled. It does stink and was not worth buying. The Brahmins in India are forbidden to eat onions, and this is their substitute. I like real onions much better.
The oil project is a wash. I mixed all liquid back into the pulp. Let everything set out all night. There was a lovely sour smell and great bubbling, but nothing resembling oil. A thick, white paste, spilling out of the jar, was all that rose to the top. It was gently warmed, but no oil resulted. My husband says that most likely the coconuts needed to be more mature to be oily. Nonetheless, I learned the basic technique and plan on trying this when we have more mature coconuts.
Thanks for your help. It was fun and gave me something to talk about at the get-together we went to this afternoon. Everybody was tres impressed.
