THIS HISTORIC MOMENT
How timely that within ten days of the Scripps Natural Supplement Conference January 27-31, 2016, NPR unleashed its documentary Supplements and Safety January 19. My assessment is that the Natural Product & Supplement Industry has policed itself and will do so even stronger now. There will be much discussion about regulation and oversight both within the industry and within government. The natural products industry will continue to flourish because it is one of the best And reasonably economic alternatives we have for improving health. The benefits from natural supplements far outweigh their potential risks. The same cannot be said of synthetic pharmaceutical drugs that are basically a war against nature, although necessary in specific circumstances.
This “Supplements and Safety” documentary points out that more than 50 people have been harmed by supplements with contaminated ingredients and suggests that more government oversight is the answer, and making sure that supplements in the US follow the trend in Europe to make them basically impotent to do what they can do in the hands of those who need them. And the skilled practitioner who delivers them.
I want to take a moment in silence to grieve the loss of the fifty or more innocent lives that were reported harmed in this NPR documentary, as well as grieve the thousands upon thousands harmed by Pharmaceutical Drugs and those harmed by GMO's and Glysophate. Food processing methods that have been harmful to American health for at least 100 years.
Truly, we will regain balance and move forward through the contributions of doctors willing to dedicate themselves in evidence-based science, as well as become healers and practitioners who are studied in the Book of Nature and the 1000's of years of experience in the way natural healing works. This history of natural healing is our legacy from the past to the future. Much of that experience is available to the students of medicine. Some of this knowledge is accessible on the Internet.
My sense is that the marketplace will continue to be driven by more and more people wanting to reclaim their health who recognize that something is deeply amiss in our modern Health Care system. More and more people are recognizing that government supports this imbalance as well as the good. Now is the time that we as voters correct this imbalance.
Integrative Medicine is Taking Hold
Integrative Medicine is now taking hold in the lives of a generation of Health Practitioners. I have been a witness to this growth since the early1980's, having lived in San Diego, California, one of the birth places of the modern Holistic Movement. In recent years, I have attended the annual Scripps Natural Supplement #ScrippsNatSup Conference, held each January, and @AIHMGlobal #AIHM16 conferences, held in late October-November. I have been invited to Plant Dreams at this events. it touches me that the Sacred work I intend to bring is welcomed. Please put these dates on your Calendar and spread the word.
The intent of Integrative Medicine is pure of heart. It is open to receive. It will catch up with the wisdom and knowledge that many in previous generations have understood about medicine. We will live to see a day when the foundation of Medicine is no longer defined by the Supplement and/or the Pharmaceutical Drugs that we take to Survive This Day. Ffragmentation of Soul and Nature is prevalent now. The choice is ours to either thrive through taking personal self-care initiatives, or continue to look to others how to live.
We will always need doctors.
We will always need others wiser than ourselves
The doctor the future is a teacher as has been demonstrated through our pioneering health history.
It's amazing the resiliency and will to survive. I see as necessary the return to our earth connection. In this the declared United Nations Year of the Pulses 2016, I am encouraging each practitioner and each #RareSeed I meet to Plant Your Dream and begin this process of reconnection.
The Return of the Doctor of the Soil
Doctors of the Soil wielding plows, replenishing the soil through a harmonious relationship between animals and heirloom seeds, and encouraging a new generation of youth to enter farming will continue to grow Regenerative Agriculture. More and more home Gardeners planting Heirloom Seeds will be our keys to unraveling the fragmentation on our plates now. I want to contribute, to participate, and to witness through this #PlantYourDreamBlog to the evolution of Medicine.
The Remedy for a "Dis Ease" Grows Close to the "Problem"
Dr. Bernard Jensen, pioneer of the natural healing arts, quoted an Armenian saying that the "Remedy" for any health "Problem" grows right next to the imbalance. This is a law of nature. As much as the documentary Supplements and Safety pointed out a real Problem--they need to ensure quality of ingredients that we can trust-- the Scripps Natural Supplement Conference was pointing out numbers of the Remedies and Solutions to the problems within Health Care as we know Health Care today.

LET'S MOVE MORE AND BE MORE HEALTHY!
The Annual Scripps Natural Supplement Conference event is a yearly tune-up for my personal health.
This conference was personally impactful. It inspired me to want to move more and be more healthy. It inspired me to take on some of the issues in my life now that are causing me stress.
Among the inspirations was hearing and spending some moments with Dr Kenneth Cooper, a long time military man, who created the word Aerobics. He inspired a desire in me to exercise more. At 84, he is an inspiration. fully committed to his life's work and passion.
Dr. Osama Hamdy M.D., one of the speakers, and I ate lunch together. He said, exercise 30 minutes a day, at least. He was also a big fan of Olive Oil. I have been stepping up my use since the conference.
I am going to eat more vegetarian more days a week. Dr. Bernard Jensen recommended eating meet no more than three times a week.
Dr. Mark Hyman spoke as well. He is apassionate man who is contributing to lessening the Waseline of America. He pointed out the damages caused by our obesity epidemic.
Dr. David Perlmutter, author of "Brain Maker," gave a moving amazing talk.
Dr. Mimi Guarneri gave a fantastic overview to cap the conference. There was more, much more to report. I would like to see the tapes of this event in the Library of Congress.

Healthcare issues are contributing to Economic Bankruptcy
We have many healthcare issues in America that are contributing to ill health and economic bankruptcy. Many Remedies for our healthcare improvement, and potential for economic well being, both individual and collectively, were expressed though the evidence-based talks at this recent 13th Annual Scripps Natural Supplements Conference January 27–31 2016 in San Diego, as well as in previous years.
It's time to clearly look at our Health Care issues. The annual Scripps Supplement Conference and its lead organizations involved--The Scripps Center for Integration Medicine and the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine #AIHM16 are to be congratulated for the profound base of knowledge they are accumulating. This annual conference is transforming the lives of medical doctors, and other health practitioners, and through them, helping patients.
The excitement that was generated at the conference was palpable and uplifting. I was personally uplifted and contributed the gifts that I'm bringing to the table, creating sacred moments where numbers of attendees planted dreams.
I believe now is the time and this is the moment to uplift healthy healthcare in America.
SOIL AND SUPPLEMENTS
I want to address the subject of soil health and supplements. Our deficiency in minerals, our building blocks according to Dr Bernard Jensen, were a cause and concern to the early health pioneers who turned to food as medicine and saw food no longer capable of helping to reverse disease.
The early pioneers who came up with our supplements had specific quality controls in mind. Their supplements were made from natural ingredients. They were not synthetic in origin.
It's clear that one of the key factors in the recent NPR supplements and safety documentary was doing all they could to give the natural supplement industry a black eye.
One rebuttal cited below says that there was a pharmaceutical company that aim to benefit from its sale of fish oil products was poised to release a new website in conjunction with the airing
of the program.
Quality control standards need to be in place. There are voices within the natural supplement industry and the herbal Industry that have been pointing out that we cannot turn to places like China for our ingredients unless those choosing these supplements are carefully monitoring the companies where they make their relationships.
Regarding the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, The history of the FDA reveals decades of problems with trusting this agency of the federal government to look out for the public good.
The FDA has a clear bias, as does big business and government, to support the companies who are invested in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries whose foundation is far from natural principles necessary to bring health.
There are very good people in all agencies of the federal government. I've met them.
Some of my most enlightening conferences that I attended with press credentials, have been the Biotechnology Industry event, as well as the annual conference of the AAAS, our national lead science group.
The leaders that are now rising up within the integrative medicine movement will find their place within the AAAS, an organization that goes back a number of hundred years to the time of Benjamin Franklin who had a relative in the founding of the group.
I saw the interactions between government leaders, industry leaders and science at AAAS. Most science research as we know it today has certain foundational principles contrary to the laws of nature, at least The laws of nature that can return health.
I can show you photographs and books that are still extant from Dr. Bernard Jensen where Nature Cure applied in a natural environment can reverse and improve chronic conditions snd show positive results.
For the kind of natural healing that Dr. Bernard Jensen did and others in the school of thought it take slowing down to the speed of nature and natural healing.
The history of the muckrakers who went out to uphold natural principles is still available. It takes is a good guide to be shown where some of this material can be found. Some of it is available on the Internet.
Dr. Bernard Jensen, 1907-2001, studied with the elder statesman of natural health from the time he was a youth to the time he was an elder.
Integrative medicine is turning to evidence-based research science research to validate now the top of the iceberg of what the natural wisdom keepers of health history knew.
There are also a lot of evidence-based research coming through organizations I support, such as the organic farming research foundation and the organic center that are validating both the problems as well as the solutions.
Many of the giants over the last hundred years were hunted down and their reputations destroyed because they stood up against the trend and accepted practices as now defined by conventional medicine today.
We cannot go far from nature without experiencing health bankruptcy and economic bankruptcy.
The recent supplements and safety documentary points out not only conditions that need to be improved but with careful study shows how deeply we need a dialogue between science, ethics, and food and all those from every point of you.

I am profoundly grateful for the benefits of conventional 20th century medicine and surgeries that have allowed me to walk again after crippling arthritis the came into my life and began to develop from teenage years.

Why Natural Healing Practitioners Turned to Supplements
There was a time in natural healing history, when practitioners turned to vegetables and fruits to help the body return to balance and eliminate "dis ease" as Dr. Bernard Jensen called it.
Supplementation came in as a result of agricultural practices that no longer produced therapeutic quality food. There was an effort to supplement what was known to be needed.
An archival report on the state of soil deficiency and his effect on human health was read into the records of the 74th Senate on June 5, 1936 by Senator Fletcher. The article by Rex Beach was on the experiments of Dr. Charles Northen M.D. to build health from the ground up.

Here is some background from my investigation. Marketplace Canada ran a story about Supplements on November 12. This story said that Vitamin C was making illegal claims.
Parts of this story were later removed, as retesting proved that their original statements against these products incorrect. The information they gave in the article potentially damaged certain companies. Marketplace apologized.

Since the best defense is a good offense, there is reason to believe that pharmaceutical industry interests are well served by casting aspersions absolutely anywhere but at themselves. And a competing industry makes a fine target. I hope Big Pharma made some really large pledges to PBS. The Frontline documentary looks to be as much an infomercial for them as it is an embarrassment for supporters of public television.

For shame PBS. I have been reading research on nutritional supplements and lecturing on this topic for over 20 years to physicians, nutrition professionals, dentists and the public. . Although I do agree with a few actual facts that were covered, this one sided view is a disgrace to public broadcasting. If they had decided to take the exact opposite view, and to instead discuss and present some of the well done published research validating nutritional supplement's benefits, they could have found just as many researchers, PhD's and MD's to back up the other side. If they had decided to show that for every person during any given 10 year period, who was apparently harmed in any way by a nutritional supplement, there would be documentation of many thousands whom were actually KILLED by prescription drugs. That number, according to published research in mainstream medical journals, is about 120,000 to 160,000 per year at a minimum, from correctly prescribed prescription drugs. I believe that CDC figures for deaths due to aspirin averages 3,000 per year and Tylenol is the same, often requiring liver transplants. I am not saying that the nutritional supplement industry is perfect, nor that all of the manufacturers are completely ethical. I am not saying the there are not a great deal of supplements, which due in large part to CHINESE ingredients, do not accurately contain what their labels claim. I am however, saying that in comparison to pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplement are extremely safe and by all means, let the buyer beware in BOTH cases. If every time an article or TV special was done on a topic, they took the time to locate equal quality experts on the other side of their chosen issues, the public would be better informed and better able to understand the real facts on the issue being presented. They claim that they contacted the TV and Web personalities Dr's Oz, Mercola, and Weil. Poor choices. They should have investigated and located top researchers on the other side of their arguments and "facts", rather than celebrity physicians. WHERE THE FDA MAY VERY WELL STAND TODAY
The Agency where we turn to safeguard our Drug and Supplement Safety is the Food and Drug Administration, an agency of the Federal government.
This #PlantYourDreamBlog includes the research links they I found as I was looking at the subject of the NPR Documentary Supplements and Safety that aired January 19, 2016.
One of my favorite FDA historical quotes is from Dr. Elmer M. Nelson who in a special Constitutional Court in Washington 1949 said:
'It is wholly unscientific to state that a well fed body is more able to resist disease than a less well-fed body. My overall opinion is that there hasn't been enough experimentation to prove dietary deficiencies make one more susceptible to disease.' (Washington Post, October 26, 1949.)
That my friend, may very well be the position of the FDA today, no matter how much evidence to the contrary.
Some of the root issues that plague the FDA are pointed out in Dr. Harvey W. Wiley's Book "A History of Crimes Against the Pure Food Law of 1929. This book once disappeared from the shelves of most libraries, however through the concerted effort of the Selene River Press and extant documents from the works of pioneer elders in the natural healing arts, we get a sense and a depth of understanding about the trauma too many over the last hundred years or so since Dr. Wiley M.D. inspired the FDA in the first place. He had something else in mind than what we experience today.

A DIALOGUE ON SCIENCE, ETHICS AND FOOD IS NOW NEEDED
In light of the recent NPR documentary, as well as the evidence-based research now available, I want to call out all parties for an open Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food.
The recent Supplements and Safety NPR documentary of January 19, although an imbalanced one-sided report presumably aimed to give the Supplements industry a black eye, yet pointed out a very important "Problem"--making sure all ingredients in supplements are not only safe, but of the highest quality standards.
Dr. Bernard Jensen, a pioneer of the natural healing arts, and one of my teachers, quoted an Armenian saying that the "Remedy" for any health "Problem" grows right next to the imbalance.
As much as the "Problem" exists, I believe the "Remedy" --many of them--were being expressed at this conference.

Remembering Nature's Original Technology

It appears that the method of testing used in the recent investigation of supplement products as set forth by the New York Attorney General we're not adequate to accurately test. Genetic barcode testing does not appear accurately test supplements and herbs according to some of my sources.
The movement toward Non-Gmo foods, and food transparency is part of the Pure Food Revolution. I am invested in this movement, following in the footsteps of other journalists and advocates within an outside government, who have dedicated their lives toward whole, pure, and natural health being seen as a foundation of healing.

The Dumbing Down of America
#ScrippsNatSup . Thinking about the dumbing down of America through the standard American diet. Clearly numbers of the doctors at Scripps conference are coming up with evidence-based research about the origins of the obesity epidemic.
Number of the doctors were referencing results they are getting with turning around diabetes 2.
There is a whole other part of the equation and I'm not sure if science can truly validate this. Hundred years or more ago a man named VG Rocine identified no less than 18 chemical types of people. The hidden part of this was that the chemical type is dictated by the soul expression and what each person is intended to do as a #RareSeed.
Dr. Bernard Jensen my teacher was one of the favorite students of Rocine.
He was a master of seeing the hypo and hyper condition of the organs and identifying which foods reflecting a deeper chemistry could be used to balance each Organ.
Much of this work was reprinted in Jensen's book the chemistry of man.
So there's two parts to this equation. One is the assault that most of us are under by environmental impact as well as not knowing the detrimental effects of the standard American diet.
These are the facts now being clearly identified by the integrative medicine MDs.
It's through the book of nature and regaining our reconnection with nature that we become more sensitive to identifying our soul and it's impulses. Emerson was a master of recognizing the relationship between nature and the soul,
Take a look at his essay on the American scholar I believe it is called.
Of course there can only be anecdotal evidence about the soul types that Rocine identified and Jensen practiced for more than 65 years on 350,000 patients.
I am a pure neurogenic type. When I get a chance I will post the qualities from the book the chemistry of man. The report of the Nerogenic type identifies my expression and behavior close to 98%.

REMEMBERING CHARLOTTE TENNEY
I met Charlotte Tenney, who died in 2015, in the closing moments of The Scripps Natural Product Conference 2015. She was a co-founder of the Trees for Health Garden in Balboa Park, a dedicated arboretum with more than 90 medicine trees.
The Trees for Life Garden has enriched my life. I would like to see others at future AIHMM related conferences be aware of it. It is located at Balboa Ave and Quince on the left side of the park.
How Dr. Bernard Jensen used Supplements
Dr. Bernard Jensen (1907-2001) was an elder of the Natural Healing Arts who left a body of material in more that 50 books, some extant, that deserves to be part of the future history of Integrative Medicine.
He was a pivotal figure studying with the older natural healing practitioners that came before him, and passing his information on this future generations. He died right before the digital age, and so many of his contributions need to be brought back to light.
How did he use supplements?
He was a master of the Reversal process. He understood how to help his patients return to health through using many of the time tested methods known by those before him that stand outside what we define as Modern Day Medicine in the Big Pharma approach.
When I worked with him as a patient, he used many supplements to jumpstart my healing process and show me what was possible, yet foremost he understood Food as Medicine. Food as Medicine is a slow process, yet a throughout approach.
When I first came to him in 1972, he I was already showing signs of crippling arthritis. We lived in a nature setting in the back country of Escondido at his Hidden Valley Health Ranch.
It was my path in life to experience surgery and hip replacements 1976 and later around 2001, Hip Revisions; yet truly my life has been a demonstration that natural remedies work,
We live in a time now when we have traveled so far away from Nature's Path that heroic measures are needed to help us "Survive This Day" ; and yet it is my Seed Dream that the wisdom he carried be transmitted to those who will help make the Medicine of Tomorrow the Medicine of Today.
I hope to contribute to a collaborative book with his grandson Jon Jensen,

2001--HIP REVISIONS
I am grateful to conventional 20th century medicine for making it possible to walk again. I so believed in natural healing that I walked out of numbers of hip surgeries in the 70's believing I could heal my hips. I benefited from hip surgeries, but even then I was using natural remedies to get through the pain. When I was asked if I wanted morphine right after surgery I said no. I was able to get through using a Peach Bark Tea remedy provided by a local Utah native american whose work was still being practices.
When the original formula was prepared one way, it was a pain remedy; prepared another way, it healed digestive issues. This is part of the lost wisdom that modern science may not comprehend unless we regain our natural path.
Had I been born in another century, I would not be walking today; and yet over a period of more than 4 decades, I have applied natural healing remedies in place of drugs whenever possible.
Some of my most severe condition have been improved through these remedies.
I set an intention in 2001, when I had hip revision, that through my Getting Hip, Healthcare would Get Hip to Being All It Could Be.
I dedicate this writing toward that goal.
I have benefited from Natural Supplements. My health has improved since the #AIHM 2015 through finding supplements that helped reverse ongoing and persistent gut health issues.
There is more to say. I will do my best to say it.

HEADING FOR WASHINGTON D.C. 2011
The Campaign to Educate Washington on Real Food Safety began through a year of following the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act. It became clear that Food Safety to some extent meant making sure that investors investments were Safe.
This photo was kinda a spoof. It was taken in the Green Room Tent that was set up when Michelle Obama came to the International Rescue Committee Roots Garden on April 15, 2010 to announce her new initiative called, "Let's Move!" Michelle was in this tent about 30 minutes before I took this photo. Turned out I did get to Washington D.C. the following year, and I did speak at Organic Listening Day at the USDA. I made friends with the organizer, Mark Lipson. He wrote on a note, "Thanks for being our Enchanted Gardener! Then, the next eve,we were in Baltimore at a Gala put on by the Organic Trade Association. Mark was being given a leadership award! He spoke about the events at the USDA the day before. He said, "we even had an Enchanted Gardener show up! I was sitting in the audience, but he did not know it. I stood up and took a bow. Everyone clapped. What a hoot! Thanks to Kelly Shea of Horizon Organics for making it possible to take my first East Coast Tour.We were doing a Cultivating Food Justice event in about a week. The organizers from the California Foundation donated the boards when I asked for them.

Most of my life I have had a condition named by Western Medicine Ankylosing Spondylosis, a form of teenage arthritis, as well as years of Inflammatory Bowel, and various kinds of cognitive disorders the result of sitting too long at the computer blogging. In spite of my moments of doubt, pain and stuck bones, Your Enchanted Gardener, my name for my soul, transcends.
We are all in the same boat sinking but for Grace. We are among the thousands of refugees on our planet struggling through conditions of war, among them the war against nature. I remain positive we will learn our lessons one way or another. There is will survive.
