Untold Healing Stories

Just had a dream from no where
about Harpo, one of my spiritual fathers
in this life. I hope you also find a Harpo
when you need him for friendship and place
to rest.

Untold Healing Stories

Just had a dream about Harpo, the cantancerous
one of a kind, outrateous Elder of the Health Tribe,
who I lived with back in 1974 and some in 1976.

I hope you have a Harpo as an ally in times
when you need a friend, in times when you need
a pat on the back.

Can't say why I was dreaming of Harpo.
One of the dreams that comes from left field,
out of nowhere.

I first discovered Harpos Health House by the Sea
some time in 73-74. I was living at Hidden Valley Health Ranch
up in the back country of Escondido. A woman, Ellen,
who years later walked in the Peace March that went across
the US of A, came up from San Diego.

She invited to come down and visit her. She took me
to lunch at Harpos. His little restaurant looked like a refrigerator
store during the day, but at night, during the year or more
that he let me exercise creativity down there, we would
cover over all the open refrigerator areas with tapistries,
create one central table, and have the World Famous Love
Feast.

During the day, Harpo and I and the family would sit
outside the Health House. We were about 50 feet from the
beach on Mission Beach, San Diego. Our little home
was right next to Hamel's Bike Shop. Anything the Hamel
Brothers seemed to touch turned to money. Anything
Harpo touched turned to some kind of story, but we never
ahd much money in the till.

During the day, during the times we got rolling with "Business,"
I would sit out front with Harpo. Beautiful people would come by.
Sometimes, Harpo would be sitting on the bench out front.

You could see a man, or a woman walking to the ocean
full of high hopes. Our street was called Ventura Place.
You could see them coming to the ocean looking for something,
wanting something, but it was not clear even to them what they
wanted.

About an hour later, or maybe longer, you will see them
walking back toward home. Many of them never had their
dreams fulfilled. They came for something, but never found it.

They would be walking toward home, maybe not sure
they wanted to go home. Harpo was a sensitive, outrageous man.
He would see them. He would yell at the top of his lungs.
"Hey, Hey You! " They would hear him even though they were
100 feet down the street, on the other side walking away
from the Beach.

They would turn around. Without saying, they would indicate
by there body language, "Who me?" Harpo would yell,
'Yes, You!, Come on over!" Then, you would see,
them turn around, and come over to where Harpo,
and I were sitting.

"Hungry?" Harpo would say. "How about a smoothie?"
"Want some lunch?"

Likely they would say yes. Then Harpo did the most
unusual thing. He would say, he would turn to Ralph,
one of our family members, and say, Ralph, go in and show
your new friend, where the food is, and "don't forget to wash
your hands.

Who in the world did business like that?

Sometimes, they ended up staying for lunch, sometimes
for dinner. Sometimes, they moved in. We had a place
in the back called the Cave. I was part of the uppity Up's of
Harpos, and so are had no one place upstairs between
Hamels and our place. The Cave sometimes looked like
a place where a bunch of kittens would cuddle around their
mother cat. It was a flea bitten sandy kind of place, and I
was too aristocratic and high minded (and internally scared)
to be that intimate with the Cave.

The year of 74 that I lived there, was a transition year for me.
I was having a falling out with Jensen, perhaps, or maybe
the Ranch was being sold. I can't say which. In any case,
I was really starting to hurt with my arthritis. I was becoming
more and more crippled. I was fasting all the time, as if
fasting was really the solution for cleansing something of
the spirit that gets stuck in the body.

I was limping real bad. I was getting very, very stuck,
and I kept trying to fast my way out of it, but it never got
to the emotional basis of why I was turning crippled in the first place.

I remember doing some treatments with Barney Meltzer,
the Encinitas M.D. nature doctor, who did acupuncture
and later wrote the Del Mar Diet.

I never told Barney that I became crippled following his
raw fruit regimen. It was just too alkaline for me at that time.
I remember trying to fast. Those were the days, I was always
trying to fast, but then, the worse thing a person can do
is break a fast wrong. I broke mine that time down at
Rocco's, the healhy pizza place at the beach.

I ended up totally and completely crippled, stuck in my body,
unable to move at all. Those were bleak times, just like
times like these. Everything was crashing around me.

I remember going back and staying up at the Ranch with
Jensen. I was already getting very, very stuck. Jensen
had tried everything. He had led me once on a two week water
fast--he did them back them. IT worked, got me really walking
smoothly, but I could not sustain
the good. Too many deep emotions, never resolved.

I ended up with a friend from Harpos, John Luly, taking me
on my back in my own van down to see Feliciano, the psychic
surgeon, who was in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, but that is another story.

So what of Harpo?

In 1976, after two hip surgeries in Utah, and some months
being abandoned in the desert at Stinky Springs--totally flat
on my back, I came back to Harpos.

In this dream, Harpo was restored to respect.
He was walking around a circle, a kind of small arena.
He was giving teachings and had his head up high.

At one point, I came out, presumably with my camera
to take his picture, but I just reached out and gave me
a big hug that he took totally in.

So many stories to tell.
So much to say about Harpo, our family,
and those days when the new age was young.

I really hope, you find your place--
that you find your comfort--
as I found with Harpo.

"Before you die,
you must write one book
and put your formulae in it"
--Dr. Alaettin Yildiz from Turkey

Harpo turned to me, his writer,
and back to the Doctor.
in revolt as if to say, "What do you think
we're doing here,
sitting on our bucket?!!!"

Opening paragraph:

In the world of the french fry,
Harpo unheld the integrity of the whole potato.
Instread of coke, he offered carrot juice. Instread
of prepackaged food, he never cut an apple
until he saw the while of the ye of the traveller.

Harpo said he was here to gain his health.
That's why he called it his health house.
Whatever he felt he was losing it,
he shut down. Whenever the sun was shining,
he knew he had to be out in it.

Some never found the door open, yet for others,
Harpo glanced at them and felt instantly healthy,
bathed in their love. To them, the store was never closed.

There were days, Harpo would not serve customers,
but that did not mean he would not serve a friend.
he might do things bad for business, but everything good
for friendship.

Without a family, there was no Harpo.

When Harpo served his friends, he was not as concerned
with income as he was outcome.

Some said Harpos was a place for crazy lovers.
Others justsaid Harpo was crazy.
Psychologists marveled that we lived in a society
that allowed such a nut to run free and do as he pleased.
Yet there were those who saw Harpo for what he was,
a master food maestro trying to complete a great meal.

___
"In memory of Harpo, throughout Military
travels, over the West Pacific, I stayed away from meat.
Harpo introduced me to the difference between
Flavor and taste. Taste can be copied and reproduced
in many forms chemically. Flavor is only created by nature
and it is expertly blended by HARPO.

Throughout Japan, Singapore, Pakistan, and the fantastic
Phillipines, Harpo's creations have Remained in a Realm
beyond comparison."
--Keith

"If you don't have worm, you don't have much!"
--Charles King
a visitor for lunch who later became famous
in some circles.

I told him when I played enthusiastically in the dirt as
a kid, they bit me. He said it was a hook and worm
quilt syndome because they don't bite. I'm still
not convinced of that.

1976

"Worms are going to be
the Salvation of man kind.
They are high in protein and enrich the land
for good natural growing. The Western world is finally
catching up with the little people who
have had so little for so long."
Sincerely,
Charles King

"I'd rather be a vegetarian.
IF we ate the worms, we wouldn't have any flowers."
