Chronic Illness, Injury, & Abuse

The correlation between chronic illness, random injuries, and an abusive environment.

I am not a "professional" qualified to render a diagnosis or provide therapy. But, I am qualified to speak about my own experiences, and those of hundreds of other Survivors' with regard to specific aspects of domestic violence and abuse. When I post about this epidemic, I'm reaching back to a previous life, and the previous lives of others, in an effort to educate and provide hope for current victims and Survivors who may be stalled on their healing paths.

With regard to chronic illnesses and injuries that are caused by direct/indirect contact with the abuser, my experiences have taught me that the negativity must (and, DOES) manifest itself in some sort of physical presentation. The body and mind work in tandem - positive energy and positive nutrition/lifestyle promotes a whole positive being, and vice versa. When a human being is overloaded with constant abuse of any type, that negativity often presents in physical form through chronic illnesses and physical mishaps.

In my case, I was constantly suffering from a multitude of physical ailments: sinus intections; headaches; bowel issues; etc. I also experienced an incredible number serious injuries: broken bones; lacerations; falls; etc. I can't recall a time during that previous life when my physical health was not an issue, except during brief times of self-empowerment. And, those few days were always followed by another cycle of abuse and/or violence lest my positivity help me climb up from the abyss of abuse. And, if I was injured or sick, the abuser was ALWAYS in more pain than I was, or more desperately ill than I was, regardless of the situation! My broken back and herniated disks were never acknowledged as serious injuries with the abuser repeatedly saying, "You didn't help ME when I hurt MY back, and I was hurt far worse than you were!" Of course, this was an exteme exaggeration, and my pain was dismissed as whining and complaining.

Not until I became involved with women' shelters and victims' advocacy did I realize that my experiences with illness and injuries were actually the "norm" in nearly all cases of domestic violence and abuse. Talking with other Survivors helped me to understand the "whole being" consequences that a person suffers when living in an environment of abuse.

This phenomenon also extends to children living in an abusive environment. Children typically experience gastrointestinal issues, infections, and odd injuries, as well, and their issues can become chronic throughout their lives if they don't find their healing paths.

The epidemic of domestic violence and abuse filters into every sector of Life, and living. People that we aren't even personally involved with the relationship are affected by this epidemic, from our children's teachers to ER personnel who treat injuries that have been inflicted. Employers, businesses, and valued clients/customers suffer from the dreadful consequences in simple business dealings that are damaged because an abuser is arrested, or a victim is hospitalized. Our Family and Criminal Courts are literally flooded with cases of domestic violence and abuse, and this epidemic shows no end in sight.

If you're in an abusive environment, you CAN Survive. Since my exit, my health and well-being have become mine - I am in control of my own choices and the freedom from abuse is like walking in beauty, every minute of every day. Sure, I have setbacks and I'm learning to manage triggers, boundaries, and other issues, but 15 years ago, I was wishing to die so that the misery would just stop. Death seemed far more preferable to existing as I was. I wasn't "living." That previous life couldn't even be compared to a one-celled organism as any instinct to survive had nearly been destroyed by the abuser. There IS HOPE, and there IS LIGHT!

Brightest blessings!
