One of the many things that was discussed on the Soil Based Organism forums was the usefulness of effective microorganisms... and that they should, as a matter of course, live and thrive in our colons.
For whatever number of reasons, toxicity, drug use etc. this is not common any more...
One must do a bit of research on this, however much has been posted in the effective microorganism forum on the issues of vitamin and enzyme production, along with natural anti-biotic production (yes, it is true) by the good bacteria and yeast that SHOULD be present throughout a healthy digestive tract.

Vegetarian or not, we should be able to regain this ability at some point (assuming a purge of inhibitors to the process) UNLESS, arguably, one eats too much protein and disrupts the flora balance.
